Smoke damage can be one of the most difficult parts of a wildfire loss to evaluate. California’s newly passed AB 1795, the Smoke Damage Recovery Act, aims to bring more clarity to the process.

The law establishes statewide standards for investigating and restoring smoke-damaged homes, including insurer-paid testing, claim timelines, restoration requirements, adjuster training, and protections around a policyholder’s choice of contractor.

For insurance and property professionals, the takeaway is important: smoke exposure is becoming a more formally defined part of the wildfire claims process.

We’re excited to see Peter Schifrin, RPA, take the stage at the 2026 Claims Conference of Northern CA in Sacramento this September! 🎤

Peter will be presenting a 1-hour CE session on Wednesday, September 2nd from 2 - 3 pm in Classroom 3, titled: "Order Out of Chaos: Managing a Complex Property Claim Involving Suspected Fraud and Coverage Issues"

The session will dig into the challenges of managing a complex commercial property claim, including suspected fraud, coverage issues, resource coordination, and preferred claims practices.

Sean Mahoney will also be attending the conference alongside Peter, and our team is looking forward to a great few days of learning, conversations, and industry connections.

Sometimes the most important question in a claim is: Who else may be responsible?

That answer is not always obvious at first. A property loss may involve a contractor. An auto accident may involve another driver. A workers' compensation matter may involve a third party. A product failure may point to a manufacturer, vendor, or installer.
