She got every question right. Then I asked her what acceleration means.
Silence.
Not "um, let me think" silence. Point-blank. She had just solved three motion problems correctly and could not tell me, in her own words, what the thing she solved for was.
That is not a bad student. That is a very good pattern-matcher.
Here is the strategy from the inside: read the problem, spot the variables, scan the formula sheet for the equation with those variables, plug in, solve. It works. It works on homework, it works on practice sets, and it works right up until someone asks her to explain.
Homework is built to hide this. Ten problems from one unit, notes open, no clock. She never has to decide what kind of problem it is, because the worksheet already told her.
The test makes her decide. Mixed units, closed notes, 50 minutes.
Then the AP exam does it again, harder. Half that exam is free response, and one of the four question types is qualitative/quantitative translation: explain in words why the math does what it does. You cannot pattern-match "justify your reasoning."
So we stopped. Definitions before problems.
An explanation means you are fine. A recital, or silence, means you found it in August. That is the good version of this.

You don't need to grind all summer, but walking in on Day 1 already comfortable with the basics is the difference between a kid who feels lost by Unit 2 and one who's ahead of the class all year.
