Congratulations to Class of 2026 SHS Grads Luke Wiken, Brooklyn Schurter and Logan Uitto for receiving the 2025 Class Challenge Scholarships!
Although we are very grateful for all our scholarship fund donors, one of our favorite scholarships to award is the Class Challenge scholarships. This scholarship reflects the continued Go Foxes! spirit of our Silverton Alumni to continue to step up and financially support our current students in continuing their education. Many of the graduated classes of SHS compete annually in a friendly competition to raise scholarship funds. This competition started by the Class of 1959 and continues to grow in donations raised each year. Three scholarships are created each year for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place classes. The Class of 1960 won the 2025 challenge for 1st place, Class of 1961 for 2nd place and 3rd place went to the Class of 1963. Thank you to all the Alumni who made donations through the Class Challenge! Which classes will win the 2026 Challenge? Details on how you can participate in the Class Challenge are in the June newsletter on our website at https://www.shsfoxes.com/newsletter/

This year we awarded the Errol and Eaden Ross scholarships to graduating seniors Gabriella Haury, Madisyn Walter and Marijke Vissers. Scholarships were also awarded to continuing college students Joanne Noordam, Trevor Redmond-Brown and Lucea Fronza. Errol and Eaden Ross moved to Silverton in the 1930’s. They owned and operated the Shell Oil and service station business in Silverton from the 1930’s until the 1980’s. Their service station was located on the corner of First and Oak Streets in downtown Silverton (present location of Silverton Realty and the SHSAA office). Errol was a thrifty businessman and was involved in the development of the Eureka Acres subdivision on West Hill where a street bears his name today. The Rosses had a dream that someday there would be a scholarship fund large enough to send every graduate of Silverton High School to college. At the time of Errol’s death in 1992, Eaden donated $250,000 to establish the Errol W. and Eaden Ross Graduate Assistance Fund for graduates of SHS. She donated an additional $240,000 from her estate upon her death in 1994. The fund merged with the SHS Alumni Association in 2009.

Congratulations to the 2026 recipients of the Dr. Peter and Marie Loar scholarships: 2026 graduates- Ryan Arthur, Jackie Kay and Caden Emmert and SHS Alumni Catherine Hyde, Hailey Meyer and Brooklyn Pfeifer. Since 1967, the students of SHS have been beneficiaries of loans and scholarships from the Estate of Dr. Peter and Marie Loar. Dr. Peter A Loar was the Silverton Health Officer from 1912 to 1949. He was a civic leader in town and was instrumental in establishing the Silverton Hospital and the Silver Falls State Park. He was also a leader in building the community swimming pool, the city’s water filtration plant, and the sewage system. He passed away in 1959 and at the time of his wife’s death in 1966 she established, through her will, the P.A. and Marie B. Loar Student Loan Fund that was transferred to the Alumni Association in 2021.
For more information on the life of Dr. Loar and his wife, check out their story in a two-part article in our June and December 2020 newsletters at www.shsfoxes.com/newsletter.

Congratulations to John St. Clair for receiving the Philip Clites Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. John will be studying Computer Science at Oregon State University beginning this fall. Following Phillip Clites’ graduation from Red Oak HS in Red Oak, Iowa in 1943, he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He taught math, geometry, physics and chemistry at SHS from 1947 to 1957. Following his initial service to SHS, he was a research Mechanical Engineer for the US Bureau of Mines in Albany until retirement in 1984. He also served his country with distinction retiring as a Commander in the Naval Reserve in 1986.
After he retired, he continued to provide a valuable service to SHS through his exceptional volunteer math tutoring. Several years ago, some of his former students established this scholarship to honor one of their favorite teachers. He was honored by SHSAA in 2002 with an honorary diploma from SHS for his commitment to the students of Silverton. Phil passed away in February 2026 just three months short of his 100th birthday.
