This, just in from Colorado from Sensei Tom Croswaite in regard to last Thursday's class that he instructed:

"Shotokan is the style I am currently studying. My instructor is Sensei Mark Tarrrant who is also the director of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) Mountain States Region. The kata I shared with the Black and Brown belt class was called 'Jion.'"

"Thank you to the Silverdale dojo and all who came out to visit. It was one of the high points of my trip to Washington. I may be studying a different style, but my roots lay in Butokukan and I'm able to use and share that info at my current dojo while adding to my martial arts experience."

Tuesday, August 25th, our instructors will turn the Silverdale Butokukan Karate Organization Dojo over to Butokukan Karate Master, Bill Olsen. We see Shihan Olsen in class often, especially on Tuesdays when Sensei Doug Wolfard's black and brown belt class follows the regular class.

Shihan Olsen was Soke Hill's "Number One" instructor over the years at the Kitsap Way Dojo. When he wasn't available, Sensei Al Hartman stood as Soke Hill's Number One. I have studied under Shihan Olsen for several years, twice, in the '70s and '80s. I look forward to seeing what he has in store for us Tuesday at 5:30.

Senseis Doug Wolfard and Ken Parker want us to get there in time to warm up well before class starts.

Thursday, August 20th, was the Silverdale Butokukan Karate Organization dojo's first "yoga night."

It was full class attendance; full of students and black belts alike, and the instructor was Emily, who has taught yoga at the East Bremerton YMCA for many years.

For most of us, it was our first introduction to yoga, and calm pleasant Emily demonstrated that she knew her stuff as well as how to introduce new students to the art and science of her style of yoga. We had a full hour and an a half smooth movement and stillness. I learned how elemental a yoga mat lent itself to relaxing and exerting ones self under guidance. It was eye opening and body bending, pleasant even while stimulating my mind. I hope we have more visits from Emily.

Last Tuesday, August 18, Sensei Ken Parker warmed up the class then turned us over to visiting sensei, and much loved former Silverdale Dojo instructor, Tom Crosswaite, just in from Colorado. The third degree Butokukan Black belt had been studying under a different style since he left the Clear Creek Dojo years ago to be with family in Colorado.

Sensei Crosswaite had a full class, plus our Black belts joined in in receiving his instruction and on helping us under-belts "get it." Some of "it"was falling into different traditional Butokukan stances in a way that put pressure "forward." Our Senseis have been emphasizing "pressure forward" in our katas, and in sparring, so Sensei Crosswaite's careful instruction used "body-English" to add perspective to this direction.

Sensei Crosswaite also taught us, in steps, a crisp sou-block-defense/mawashi-kia attack that moved the body mass and limbs of an opponent out of the way while moving our body mass in close for delivery of strikes and kicks. This, with exit positioning ready after delivery.

Since Tuesday classes are always followed by the dojo's lead Black Belt, Sensei Doug Wolfard's Black and Brown Belt Class, there were plenty of guest Black belts from the Port Orchard Butokukan Dojo. That included newly minted shodan black belt, David Caines, bowing in in one photo. His Shodan test was the previous Saturday, August 15 a the Port Orchard Butokukan Karate Dojo.

The group shot of all the Black and Brown Brown Belts who attended Doug Wolfard's class show a collection of the top Kitsap County Butokukan instructors from over the years.

In the photo of those in the regular Silverdale Butokukan Organization class, closest to cameraman Sensei Tony Hernandez, is Rebekah Pfrimmer in her kyu-kyu orange belt. Rebekah and er husband Thomas Pfrimmer were standout Silverdale Butokukan students under Sensei Doug Wolard and Shihan Francisco Labalan five years ago. That's when Rebekah was admitted to the University of Oregon Law School at Eugene. Thomas had achieved the rank of purple belt when the two left.

Now an attorney, Rebekah hadn't sparred or put on a gi in five years, but she jumped right into the the sparring at the end of class. She did well, showing that she had retained A LOT.

"Of course, Tim," Shihan Tony Adamski noted. "She learned under the best!"

Note that, regardless of who is one's personal instructor or "up-line sensei," all of us under belts are under the instruction of all our Black belts, and particularly our Red Belt Masters.

Another BKO DOJO alert; this one much closer in time:

Thursday, August 20th, skilled yoga instructor "Emily" will be taking over the karate class.
Beg, borrow or otherwise bring a yoga mat, and be prepared to learn about the art of stretching through relaxation and exertion. Shihan Tony Adamski attended her classes for years and believes that we may all benefit from the quality her instruction.

To all students attending the Butokukan Karate Organization's Dojo on Clear Creek Road:

This an early heads-up on the weekend campout scheduled for October 2, 3, and 4 at the West Sound View Camp and Retreat Center in Longbranch, Washington. Our leadership is asking for spouses and family to release the karate student in the family to their care for those days.

The cost is $100 per student. The facility has charming 3-person cabins that border Puget Sound. There will be student and instructor "cook offs" for those interested. Also, there will be karate seminars and water crafts for fun on the water. More information will follow as October draws near.

The June 13th Shodan black belt test was attended by many an iconic/historical Butokukan black belt. There are no action videos, but all in the group photos and other photos reflect the energy and spirit of that Saturday afternoon. The food and fellowship afterward was also great!

In the group shot down front from the left, is Pt. Orchard Butokukan Dojo brown belt, Robin Bishop. To her left is BKO Dojo page administrator and unofficial "den mother," Jean Austin; then "Inspector" Peadar Sanches; Green belt Paul Heathcock; BKO lead black belt, Sensei Doug Wolfard. And, lastly, historical Butokukan karate icon, Sensei Paul Adamski.

Second row, from the left in the all black gi is the BKO's "Goblin King"... I mean, Sensei Tony Hernandez; off his left shoulder, standing tall with arms folded is newly tested 3rd Degree BKO black belt Steven Harader; off Sensei Harader's left shoulder is the Shelton Butokukan Dojo's lead black belt and icon, Tim Ford. To Sensei Ford's left and slightly in front of him is the newest BKO shodan black belt, Vaughn Collier. To Sensei Collier's left is the black belt and author Soke Hill used to call, "an unusual martial artist," Dave Burrows. To Sensei Burrows' left is the lead BKO Dojo master, Shihan Tony Adamski. Off Shihan Adamski's left shoulder is Sensei Ken Parker; off Sensei Parker's left shoulder and slightly in front is the BKO's other master in an all black gi, AKA "the perfectionist," Shihan Francisco Labalan. Behind him, and hidden from view is BKO sensei David Diprete.

In the final row against the mirror is "game" new white belt and tough aggressor Tom McMannamna; to his left is advanced green belt, Laurie; next is game aggressor Peter Wagner. To Wagner's left the tallest Butokukan black belt in the photo, and the only Butokukan black belt to ever defeat Dan Anderson in a tournament when both were in their prime, Sensei Dan Morrison. To Sensei Morrison's left in a black baseball cap is Shelton Butokukan icon, Sensei Dave Webber. To Sensei Webber's left and just behind Sensei Parker's left shoulder is the Pt. Orchard Butokukan Dojo's lead black belt, Sensei Chuck Hesse. Last, and to the right of hidden BKO sensei Diprete, is Butokukan Karate legend, black belt David Leonard.

In the second smaller group photo, from the left is Shihan Tony Adamski, then Sensei Ken Parker; then Sensei Vaugn Collier; and lastly, no longer hidden, "the professional," Sensei David Diprete. The "almost" retired science teacher is an active master in another martial art, who uses his teaching skills effectively on us often.
