♟️Checkmate! Silver Oaks recently welcomed students and families from across the area for The Knight School's bi-annual chess tournament hosted on our campus.

Congratulations to Deven and Dhruv, who each won their grade-level bands. We loved seeing our students put their skills into action and share their enthusiasm for chess with so many visiting players.

Before May draws to a close, we want to celebrate the incredible educators who make Silver Oaks such a special place for our students and families. 💚

Earlier this month, our community showed appreciation with a taco bar, flowers, treats, and more, but the gratitude continues year-round. Join us in celebrating our teachers by sharing a note of appreciate in the comments below!

🦅 Congratulations to Henry, one of our outstanding 8th graders, on completing his Eagle Scout project right here on campus!

For his Eagle Project, Henry chose to improve our “backyard” play space by planning and leading a three-day effort to remove a rotting fence and install 150 feet of brand-new fencing. He organized the project from start to finish, recruiting volunteers, making key decisions, and providing thoughtful leadership every step of the way.

We are incredibly proud of Henry and deeply grateful for his hard work and service to our school community. Thank you, Henry, and thank you to Scouting America for helping develop young leaders who make a meaningful difference in their communities! 🎉👏

Spring Fling brought our community together for an evening full of fun.🌸🪩 With dancing, sweet treats, and DJ Jeff the Chef (AKA Mr. Jeff) keeping the party going, it was a joyful way to celebrate spring together.

A special shoutout to our 6th grade Explorations students, who planned and ran the bake sale as part of their service learning project. Guests directed their donations to three local organizations, raising funds for DC Diaper Bank, SMYAL, and Healing Justice. We're so proud of their thoughtful work and community impact.

Our fifth grade exploration at Greenbelt Theatre is an opportunity for students to combine creativity and purpose. Students spend several weeks creating original public service announcements focused on social justice and environmental issues. Swipe for a peek into a student film on deforestation. (And thank you to Dr. Caitlin McGrath and Lauren Rankely for guiding this experience.)

What's unique about our Middle School experience? A lot of learning happens outside the classroom. Through partnerships with outside organizations, our students explore, ask questions, and try new things each week. Earlier this year, our 6th graders toured the National Air & Space Museum with a rocket scientist and even got a chance to learn how to land a plane!

🌈 Rainbow Day: a favorite Silver Oaks tradition. Each student wears a single color, and together we form a rainbow. It's a simple idea, but it reflects something deeper. Each student is an important part of the whole, and when we come together, we create something bright and joyful.

Art, research, and storytelling came together in a special way at our recent pop-up museum. Third graders researched an inspirational Black American, wrote biographies, and created abstract portraits inspired by their subject. Fifth graders explored portraiture through a partnership with the National Portrait Gallery and a virtual class with artist Reginald Laurent. Inspired by his work, each student created a self portrait.

Our Annual Giving Campaign begins today. As Silver Oaks nears the end of its eighth year, we continue building a school that is strong today and sustainable for the future.

Tuition covers most, but not all, of the true cost of a Silver Oaks education. Annual Giving helps make up the difference. Join us in supporting this community ➡️ silveroakscooperative.org/donate
