“Don’t be sad it’s over, be glad it happened.” —Dr. Seuss

10+ years together! What a good run our little backyard project had… and, oh, what lessons we learned along the way!

Learning to build stuff was the least of it frankly. We discovered what we were capable of with no prior carpentry skills—just a desire to make something 💖.

At its core, our Little Main Street was (is) a story of self-discovery 🔎 and connection 👥 —with ourselves and each other. I coudn’t be more proud of what we created together.

The seasons came and went 🍂❄️. The kids grew. 🌱
The playhouses stood the test of time ⏳and the elements 🌪️! Who knew how they would grow with us?!

Our little DIY backyard family build project wasn’t so little after all.

Time sure flies when you are having fun. And sure had a ball living, creating, and playing!!!

Onward!

After a few years, the National Building Museum was set to close their children’s play area (Building Zone) where the playhouse lived. Port Discovery Children’s Museum was interested in featuring it in one of their pop-up play spaces 📍.

With the help of our friends at the Museum, we disassembled 🛠️, refreshed 🖌️and donated 🎁 it to the Baltimore museum.

Traveling Prototype Finds a Permanent Home!

How wonderful to be back at the National Building Museum for a third year in a row at the Big Build Family Festival! Everything got a new fresh coat of paint 🎨before we facilitated another day of 📖 and 🎭 using our LMS Storytelling Toolkit.

After the event, we were delighted to donate 🎁 the playhouse and all its interchangeable components to the Museum. It was a perfect addition to their family playspace, the Building Zone.

Grace 👧🏻 and Leo 👦🏼 were clearly thrilled (lol) and Dad was there to photograph 📸 the whole thing in true Mel fashion. 😊

Mayors 🎩, and workers ⛑️, and townspeople 👒…oh my!

How appropriate that the NBM festival theme that year was play. I created a storytelling toolkit to help facilitate dramatic play 🎭 using the playhouse as a backdrop. We put it to the test and were thrilled see so many engaged 😍 and enthusiastic 🤗 participants!

An amazing theater educator, Daniel 🤩, joined us to lead the audience through different storylines 🎬 at the top of every hour 🕐. Participants picked random characters 👥, emotions🤪, and events 🎉from the the toolkit to get their time in the spotlight 🎤 acting out fun scenes that organically took shape.

The backdrop (playhouse storefront) changed with each storyline. Between stories, we invited everyone inside to experience the store in action and and receive a themed momento. 🍭💅🏼🦴

Facilitated improv 🎬. Curated takeaways 🎁. Experiential fun ✋✋🏻✋🏼✋🏽✋🏾✋🏿!

Proof of Concept! 🧰✔️

The Baltimore JCC approached us asking, “Can you recreate what you built in your backyard for us???”

They were in the midst of repurposing an indoor space in an effort to attract new members and host family programs.

We enlisted the professional ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️skills of our dear friend, Chris, a master carpenter, to custom build the town. 🔨🪜🪚

The custom branded signage we designed inside/outside of each playhouse (storefront) acknowledged each sponsor in meaningful ways (old school menus🍴, family photos 📸, handpicked tchotchkes 🫶🏼, etc...)
All in all, the recognition opportunities for local businesses and members in exchange for funding the “town build” were a hit for all involved‼️ We even created a custom scavenger hunt 🔍 Birthday-Party-In-A-Box 🎈🎂🎁for a special set of twins. :)

The sponsorship model worked! A true community build experience.

It’s a Thing!

Check out line to get into our little playhouse at The Big Build Family Festival at the National Building Museum ❣️

See how changing the components (the scene 🎬) every hour ⏰ sparked curiosity 🤔.

Once inside customers sampled candy 🍭 (Candy Shop), got manicures 💅🏼(Beauty Salon), and played with animals 🐶🐱🐰🦖🐍 (Pet Shop) depending on which time they came by.

Needless to say, there were many repeat customers that wanted to sample each different experience!
Nothing beats the and of hands-on activities!

One Stop Shopping 🛒

Now that we established the fact that Little Main Street was a thing on its own, it was time to take it take it to the next level. There were so many possibilities (opportunities), but so little space!

That’s the idea💡behind this second prototype commission.

With interchangeable components, the user has the ability to change the playhouse from one store to another in a matter of minutes. The beauty salon💈transforms to a candy shop 🍭, to a pet shop 🐾, and so on.

We brought props and activity samples to a local shipping container manufacturer and challenged them with the job. And they delivered! Thank you Lap!

Flexibility, sustainability, and endless possibilities for play! All in one tiny footprint.👣
