Today, I have another interesting lesson for you. We will talk about how to use เป็น bpen. I am sure that you are familiar with this word as the meaning of the "verb to be". But do you know that there are other ways that we use this word? Let's take a look at it together.
By the way, here is the link to the video mentioned in #2 usage. I covered the difference between เป็น bpen and ได้ dâai in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCsP_0TdrUY.
Hopefully, you learned something useful today. And don't forget to practice Thai in your daily life. 😊😊

Here is the link to "Useful Thai prefixes I"https://www.facebook.com/LearnThaiWithKruJu/photos/a.104064234704955/245894853855225/
When you hear new vocabulary that you don't know, you may have to look them up in dictionary. However, knowing some useful prefixes may help you guess the meaning of some words easily. Another benefit of knowing some of these useful prefixes will be to help you come up with new vocabulary in a needed situation. So, today I would like to introduce a few often-used prefixes in Thai. Let's take a look together.
Hopefully, you learned something useful today. And don't forget to practice Thai in your daily life. 😊😊

Useful Thai prefixes I

Another benefit of knowing some of these useful prefixes will be to help you come up with new vocabulary in a needed situation. So, today I would like to introduce a few often-used prefixes in Thai. Let's take a look together.
1. ที่ têe has several meanings. However, the one that we will focus on today is the meaning of "a place" and it acts as a noun. When you place ที่ têe in front of a verb, then it changes that verb to be a noun and has a meaning of the place that you do that action. Can you take a look at these vocabulary words and guess the meaning of them before scrolling down to look at the meaning?
ที่กิน têe gin
ที่นอน têe norn
ที่เล่น têe lâyn
ที่นั่ง têe nâng
Now let's check if your answers are correct or not.
- ที่กิน têe gin means a place where you eat so it can refer to a dining table, or a restaurant.
แถวเยาวราชมีที่กินที่ไหนน่าไปกินบ้าง
tăew yao-wá-râat mee têe gin têe năi nâa bpai gin bâang
Where are good places to eat in Chinatown?
- ที่นอน têe norn means a place where you sleep; it usually refers to a bed or a mattress.
ที่นอนอันใหม่นอนไม่สบายเลย

- ที่เที่ยว têe-tîieow means a place where you go for leisure; it usually refers to a travelling spot.
เชียงใหม่มีที่เที่ยวดีไหม
Chiang-mài mee têe-tîieow dee dee măi
Is there any good travelling spot in Chiang Mai?
- ที่นั่ง têe nâng means a place where you sit; it usually refers to a chair, a sofa.
ที่นั่งบนเครื่องบินเล็กมาก
têe nâng bon krêuuang-bin-lék mâak
Chairs on airplanes are very small.
2. ค่า kâa (noun) fee
Whenever you add ค่า kâa in front of a verb or a noun, then it has a meaning of a fee of that action/noun.
For exmaple:
- ค่าบ้าน kâa bâan a fee for housing, it can refer to a rent, a mortgage.
เดือนนี้ยังไม่ได้จ่ายค่าบ้านเลย
deuuan-née yang mâi dâai jàai kâa bâan loiie
I haven't paid the mortgage this month yet.
- ค่าเช่า kâa châo rent

- ค่าเรียน kâa riian tuition fee, studying fee

Having three children, I can barely pay their tuition fees.
- ค่าข้าว kâa kâao/ค่ากิน kâa gin cost of food/meal

Today's lesson : How to use ถึงไหน tĕung năi.
I was teaching a group class, and I was having my class try to translate a sentence with ถึงไหน tĕung năi. They got confused, since sometimes this word doesn't have a direct translation . Let's find out more about this question word in today's lesson together.
ถึง tĕung (v)- for here, it has the meaning of to arrive
ไหน năi (question word) - where
ถึงไหน tĕung năi - It is usually used to ask your location in a question.
For example:
ตอนนี้ถึงไหนแล้วเนี่ย ใกล้ถึงบ้านยัง
dton-née tĕung năi láew nîa, glâi tĕung bâan yang
Where are you at now? Are you almost home?
It is also used as a complaint when someone is far behind something/someone. However, for here it is just a statement, not a question.
ทำไมยังไม่ตื่น เดี๋ยวก็สายหรอก คนอื่นเขาไปถึงไหนกันแล้ว
tam-mai yang mâi dtèun, dĭeow gôr săai ròk, kon èun kăo bpai tĕung năi gan láew
Why aren’t you up yet? You are going to be late. Other people have been far ahead of you already.
ทำไมแกสองคนยังไม่แต่งงานกันอีก คู่อื่นเค้าไปถึงไหนกันแล้ว
tam-mai g*e sŏng-kon yang mâi dtàeng ngaan gan èek
kôo èun káo bpai tĕung năi gan láew
Why haven’t you two married yet? The other couples are so far ahead of you. (As they are already married, and have kids, etc)
Now, let’s take a look at another usage of ถึงไหน tĕung năi. When you add the word จะ jà.
จะ jà+v/adj+(ไป)ถึงไหน (bpai) tĕung năi
When you use จะ jà with ไปถึงไหน bpai tĕung năi, it is mostly used to complain, to show annoyance, It has the meaning of "how much more are you going to do/be....?
For example:
จะเที่ยวไปถึงไหน ไม่ยอมทำงาน เดี๋ยวก็ไม่มีเงินหรอก
jà tîeow bpai tĕung năi , mâi yom tam ngaan, dĭeow gôr mâi mee ngern ròk
How much more are you going to travel? You are going to go broke without working.
จะโกรธไปถึงไหน ง้อจนเหนื่อยแล้วนะ
jà gròht bpai tĕung năi, ngór jon nèuay láew ná
How much longer are you going to be mad? I'm getting tired of trying to make up with you.
จะอ่านหนังสือไปถึงไหน มาช่วยแม่ล้างจานก่อนสิ
jà àan năng-sĕu bpai tĕung năi, maa chûay mâe láang jaan gòn sì
How much reading are you going to do? Come help me (mom) washing dishes first.
Hopefully, you learned something useful today. And don't forget to practice Thai in your daily life. 😊😊
