Madison Gardner graduated from with a double-major in Rehabilitation Services and Psychology this spring. Gardner has faced some unique challenges in her higher education career, from attending a university that was closed due to finances to suffering concussive injuries that led to the end of her collegiate athletic career.
As Gardner navigated these challenges, she discovered her passion in working with people with disabilities. Working closely with her mentor, Associate Professor of Psychology Mark Chu, she conducted research funded through the WNMU Research and Professional Development program.
This spring Gardner presented her research, “Attitudes Toward Autistic Individuals in Employment,” at the Western Psychological Association convention in California.

Policymakers make a profound impact on our communities. It is very important for rehabilitation professionals to connect with elected officials to give voice to our profession and those we serve.
Just had a great meeting this morning with WNMU'S Dr. Debra Dirksen, Dean of Education, Dr. Cindy Martinez, Assistant Dean of Education and Dr. Ben Jenkins, Assoc. Professor about the needs of the university and our educational system.
Our conversations were about early childhood development programs, LEAP program for alternative teachers licensing and the impact of lack of resources in the home that can hinder a students success.
