Membership in Delta Mu Delta should be the goal of every student in business in a bachelor's or master's program at a school where there is a chapter of Delta Mu Delta.This membership provides recognition for a lifetime. As the highest national recognition a business student can earn, it is appropriate to include Delta Mu Delta membership on one's resume. Membership in Delta Mu Delta fulfills one
of the requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level in numerous professional and technical occupations in the federal service. Many campus chapters provide opportunities for members to meet together with corporate leaders for networking opportunities and to hear speakers discuss current business issues. To be eligible for membership, the academic ranking of those being considered must place them in the upper 20 percent of the junior, senior or master's classes. While almost 300,000 student receive bachelor's or master's degrees in business each year, only about 5000 students are elected to membership in Delta Mu Delta. The purposes of Delta Mu Delta are to promote higher scholarship in training for business and to recognize and reward scholastic achievement in business subjects. Delta Mu Delta was founded as a national organization in 1913 when five professors in the School of Commerce, Finance and Accounts at New York University, who believed that recognition should be given to outstanding students of business administration subjects, founded the first chapter. Delta Mu Delta was incorporated in 1952, and in 1963 was admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies(ACHS). In 1992 the Society established an affiliation with the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) whereby future chapter establishment occurs only at colleges and universities with business programs accredited by the ACBSP at the baccalaureate/graduate level.
