October is Fire Prevention Month!

Tomorrow morning, our Pre-K crew is getting a special visit from a few of the guys from the Silver Bay Fire Department!

We're pretty excited to welcome some of our local heroes into our classroom! We'll be learning about fire safety, asking what I'm sure will be some very interesting questions, and getting to know the people who help keep our community safe.

Taking Heggerty Heroes to the next level in pre-k!

Cape on. Hero gear ready. Phonemic awareness underway.

One of my favorite things about Pre-K is that curriculum doesn’t have to look like curriculum. We can listen for sounds, rhyme, blend, segment, move our bodies, be a little silly AND learn.

If wearing a cape helps make phonemic awareness stick, I’m in.

Here’s a little peek at what we’re working on this month, plus a few dates to remember. Lots of learning is happening around here, and if we’re doing it right, most of it is happening through fun and PLAY!

Fall is hands down the prettiest season, and it also gives us a pretty incredible science classroom.

Science can be tough to fit into the early childhood (P-3) day when so many minutes are dedicated to literacy and math, so we embed it. A fall walk becomes science, math, language, movement, and play without children ever knowing we checked five boxes.

Parents AND teachers: check out the Jeffers Foundation and the guide I’m sharing. It has some great ideas for getting children outside to explore, wonder, collect, build, and just P L A Y. Nature play doesn’t need to be elaborate.

Sometimes we just need to open the door and let them explore.
And fall gives us the perfect excuse.

October is here!

We have lots of fun and learning packed into October! We’ll be exploring fall, building number sense, beginning Orton-Gillingham, celebrating Learning by Doing Day, and spending plenty of time outside while the weather still lets us.

A couple reminders: Please send a jacket every day, and check the calendar for Picture Retake Day and our MEA break.

And something fun is coming! Little Mariners Pre-K and ECFE are helping with the Haunted School Forest this year! Keep an eye out for more information coming soon. We’re excited to be part of it!

Today might have been the BEST I have ever seen a group of Pre-K kids do with rhythm sticks.

Rhythm sticks are so much more than making noise (although we are very good at that part ). They require listening, stopping and starting, impulse control, coordination, and self-regulation.

And today we used them to wrap up our morning meeting number work.

Because knowing the name of a number is one thing, understanding that a number has VALUE is another.

A 3 means we have three of something. It can also mean tap your sticks three times, stomp three times, or do three jumps.

That’s how Pre-K curriculum works best: hear it, see it, say it, touch it, move it, DO it.

Happy Homecoming from the Class of 2039!

We’ve been getting into the Homecoming spirit all week, and yesterday these guys made their own Mariner shirts for Spirit Day! And yes…they had an absolute blast doing it.

Tonight there’s Mariner volleyball, tomorrow night is football, and our Class of 2039 is already learning what it means to be part of their school community.

GO MARINERS!

In Defense of Empty Backpacks

This picture pretty much sums up why you won’t see a lot of worksheets or “perfect” art coming home from our Pre-K room
Worksheets are really good at showing whether a child can complete a worksheet. At four years old, we want to know so much more.

Can they count actual objects? Do they understand what a number represents? Can they cut, draw, build, create, problem solve, make a plan, change that plan, and try again?

And product art, insert sigh, the kind where everyone’s pumpkin, snowman, or apple looks exactly the same. That tells us more about what product the adult wanted to do, or how well a child can copy an adult, than it does about the child.

Give 15 children paint, paper, scissors, glue, and an idea, and I hope we get 15 different results!

In Early Childhood Education, the learning is in the process, not the product.
So the backpacks might be a little empty…But we promise, their brains are not

We’re starting Second Step tomorrow!

We are so excited to start our Second Step curriculum tomorrow! Ms. Sarah, our ECSE teacher, will be joining us during small-group time to teach it, which makes it even better!

Second Step focuses on those BIG skills four-year-olds are still learning: recognizing and managing emotions, paying attention, solving problems, showing empathy, making friends, and learning what to do when things don’t go quite their way.

These are skills we work on all day long in Pre-K, but Second Step gives us another intentional way to practice them together. And just like everything else at this age, we’ll learn through stories, conversations, movement, practice, and lots of repetition.

We’re excited to have Ms. Sarah joining our room and can’t wait to get started!

Stop asking, “What number is this?”

Okay, not forever. But hear me out.

Just like we don’t want every interaction with a four-year-old to be, “What color is this?” “What letter is this?” or “What shape is this?” I don’t want math to become one big quiz either.

This week in Pre-K, we’re really starting to dig into number sense. Before we worry about whether a child can look at 4 and name it, we want them to understand what four actually means.

Instead, try asking:

“How many do you see?”
“Can you show me that many?”
“Which group has more?”
“How did you know?”
“Can you show me another way?”

We’ll also be working on subitizing, recognizing how many are in a small group without counting each one.

Four-year-olds don’t need us constantly testing what they know. They need opportunities to think, notice, play, and make connections.

Knowing the answer is great. Understanding what it means is even better.

We'll be sending home this little tip sheet this week with some easy ways to build number sense at home! The home/school connection is so important!
