Roy Roscoe "Rocky" Walker, Jr.
1944-2019

Roy Roscoe Walker, Jr., known to his many friends as Rocky, passed away on July 28, 2019 at his home in Stokesdale, North Carolina, with his loving wife Carolyn Jean Walker at his side.
Rocky was born in Dallas, Texas, on February 15, 1944, the only child of Roy Roscoe Walker, Sr., and Maureen King Walker. He graduated from W.H. Adamson High School and attended the University of Texas at Arlington.
He was married to Carolyn Jean Meininger on July 28, 1990. They were husband and wife for twenty-nine years to the day.
When Rocky left his hometown of Dallas, it was to expand his horizons as an aviator, to literally spread his wings. He flew for the original Piedmont Airlines, Atlantic Aviation, and Petty Racing. He was an early innovator in the world of skydiving (Freak Brother #110). He began flying wildland fires as an air attack pilot with Orion Aviation in 2008, spending summers in Washington state (Colville and later Deer Park). His winters were devoted to flying Orion's marine mammal survey missions for Wildlife Trust, later Sea to Shore, working on the Endangered Northern Right Whale Project out of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. In 2014, Rocky began wintering in St. Augustine, Florida, again flying for the Right Whale Project, this time with the Florida Wildlife Resources Commission. Whether fighting fires in the summer or saving whales in the winter, Rocky was always supported by Carolyn, who traveled with him from coast to coast. In his more than fifty-five years in aviation, Rocky was a mentor, sage and guiding light to dozens of new aviators.
In addition to being an expert pilot and skydiver, Rocky was an avid hang glider, windsurfer, skier, and three wheel cyclist. He was a gifted singer/songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player. He loved God, country and family. Rocky's personal philosophy (in his own words) was that "Life is too short to waste wishing, not doing."
Rocky is survived by his wife Carolyn and his son, Ryan McCrae Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Roy Roscoe Walker III.
