Chatham Charter School

Chatham Charter is a fully accredited K-12 public charter school in Siler City, NC.

Among the first group of schools in North Carolina to receive a charter in 1996, we are situated in Chatham County, just off Highway 64 in Siler City. With 39 acres and a current 23,000 sq-ft-facility, we serve a diverse K-8 student population that has increased in size from 126 in 1997 to 315 in 2011. In 2008, we opened our Middle School in a new separate building, with a modern and well equipped

gymnasium completed in 2010. Our brand new high school is opening in August 2013 beginning with 9th and 10th graders. We are partnering with Central Carolina Community College so that students will begin taking college level courses in their junior year of high school, and will have have the opportunity to graduate with 30 - 45 transferable college credits.

The media center is known for its books, but has lots of other opportunities for students to explore academic and personal interest topics. Even Princess Izzy, a bearded dragon, made an appearance to greet a class for a special story early in the school year. Is it a function? Eighth grade students taking the Math 1 course went on a scavenger hunt today learning what it means to be a function.

What’s going on in the hall? Chemistry students modeling Ernest Rutherford's "Gold Foil Experiment" in which he discovered the nucleus of atoms and made the observation that atoms were made of mostly empty space with a positively charged center.

Dropping in on a science class: While studying the scientific method, eighth graders are conducting an experiment in teams today using balls that differ in shape, size, and density. They’re filming ball drops in slow motion and documenting results.

In one of the week’s most anticipated assignments, 8th graders had a mock trial in social studies. They played the roles of Christopher Columbus, his men, the Spanish monarches, the system of empire, and jurors as they debated aspects of New World exploration.

We’re getting ready for Knights Family Weekend! Mark your calendars for Friday evening and Saturday, October 2&3. There will be even more activities this year than in previous ones.

DECA met with their haunted trail mentor, Brian Garff of Panic Point, Friday morning to get insight and advice. Representatives from groups across campus had a planning meeting Friday afternoon for Knights Family Weekend. We’ll finalize everything and be able to soon share details about all you can look forward to.

Here are a few activities and a campus improvement to enjoy:

- Third graders used team building skills to save “Fred” and bring him home safely in his “life saver vest.”

- Sixth grade students are pictured working on an activity to demonstrate understanding of the scientific “Claims, Evidence, Reasoning” relationship.

- We’re excited about the new soccer scoreboard!
