Thrasher Elementary School State of Tennessee Reward School 2012, 13 &14
http://thrasher.hcde.org/ In the fall of 1999, it was reopened as a K - 5 school serving over 500 students.

Thrasher is a Kindergarten through grade 5 school located in the heart of Signal Mountain, TN. From 1975 - 1999, Thrasher served the mountain as an intermediate school with grades 3 - 5. The inside of the school reflects the warmness of the mountain with an indoor pond and park benches. Throughout the school, the walls are palettes for learning. Murals around the school continue the theme of the community and/or the curriculum of that grade level. The building reflects the school's child-friendly and nurturing culture. Promethean boards are installed in classrooms (grades 2 - 5). Teachers in all grade levels use technology as a tool to enhance and differentiate instruction; students use computers to publish writings, conduct research, create presentations, and practice academic skills. We also boast a thriving extra-curricular clubs program. Students can choose up to two clubs to attend; with a variety of selections from the Book Club to the Robot Club, there's something for everyone. Cultural Arts are an emphasis at this school. Our goal as an Allied Arts* school is to provide students with basic skills, appreciation, and understanding of dance, literary arts, music, theater, and visual arts. We also plan and implement an advanced infusion of instruction to meet the grade-level benchmarks within art disciplines based on national and state standards. Funds from Allied Arts and PTA provide a BrainDance teacher for K - 1 students. PTA also provides an Art teacher for the school. The music program offers chorus and handbells to fifth-grade students. Character Education is a goal of the system as well as the school. Weekly assemblies concentrate on the character trait of the month and students who exemplify those traits are recognized with Panther Pride. Technology is integrated into the curriculum and viewed as a tool to enable learning. Each class is networked and has access to the Internet. There are at least three computers in every classroom. A stationary lab is provided for grades 2-5, and a primary writing and reading lab for K-1 students with a teacher provided for in each lab. Grade 2-5 classrooms are equipped with Promethean Boards, laptop computers, and projectors. K-2 with document cameras and projectors and to continuously upgrade our technology to enhance learning. Accelerated Reading, Study Island, and IXL are school-wide programs that students use. Students also have opportunities to create multimedia presentations that are published locally in the school and globally on the web.

This quarter, Kindergarten students learned about how they are citizens in their homes, school, and community. Students learned about authority figures, community helpers, and members in their neighborhoods. They learned how to be a good citizen, and came up with a way to show their appreciation and honor community heroes that keep us safe and make Thrasher a great place to play, live, and learn.

Students used what they learned about the 6-traits of Medal of Honor Recipients, and held a Community Helper Tea honoring Signal Mountain’s Community Heroes. They made thank-you cards and wearable medal in our eLab, and they presented these medals, sang songs of appreciation, and wrote messages of gratitude to local heroes. We are so proud of our youngest panthers and their citizenship in our community!

Thank you to all our Community Helpers who joined us today! 🚔🚒🚑📚📬👩‍⚖️👨‍🏫👨‍✈️👷🏼‍♂️👩🏾‍🍳👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏼‍🌾

This morning, Thrasher was honored to welcome Medal of Honor Recipient, David Bellavia, for a very special experience with our students and faculty. Mr. Bellavia received our nation’s highest military honor for his extraordinary courage and service to others.

During his visit, Mr. Bellavia spoke with our students, in grades 2-5, in an age-appropriate way about the six Medal of Honor Core Values: Courage, Commitment, Sacrifice, Integrity, Citizenship, and Patriotism. This experience helped our youngest Panthers understand what these values can look like in their own lives—being brave, doing what is right, helping others, keeping their word, and making a positive difference in their community.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our children to see that character matters, our choices matter, and even the youngest Panthers can lead with courage and kindness.

Kindergarten students at Thrasher are enjoying a new sensory hallway this year! The space provides students with opportunities to stretch, spin, hop, breathe, and wiggle when they need a brain break throughout the day.

Because it is not developmentally appropriate for five- and six-year-olds to sit for extended periods of time, these movement opportunities help students reset, refocus, and return to learning ready to engage.

This project was made possible through the vision of our kindergarten teachers, the creative talent of graphic designer Elizabeth Solomon-Schimpf, generous grant funding from the PTA and the Mountain Education Foundation, a valued partnership with PrintTree Graphics, and the many volunteers who took time out of their Summer to come help paint. Together, they created a space where students can take turns moving through the hallway as needed throughout the school day.

Teachers and students are already seeing increased engagement during lessons and renewed excitement for learning. The sensory hallway has also sparked interest among students in older grades, and is sure to bring joy, movement, and learning opportunities to our school community for many years to come!

It’s Spooky season, Panthers! 🐾

Mr. Newman’s 5th grade class was our top earner from Panther Prowl and got to help design the Halloween themed spirit rock! While in Ms. Alsobrook’s art class, they designed multiple iterations that Panther Parent, Brandis White, ultimately brought to life on our rock!! [Which by the way, Ms. White’s dedication was on full display as she painted away throughout the rainy weekend!!]

Yesterday’s championship race ended the season for our Thrasher Panther cross-country team, and what a day it was!!

Panthers had 18 runners that received medals (finishing in the top 15) as individuals - including 2 first place finishes and 3 second place finishes!

As a team, Thrasher finished first place in third grade girls, fourth grade boys and girls, and fifth grade boys. Third grade boys finished third overall.

And we had an AMAZING teacher cheer squad who traveled all the way to Camp Jordan in traffic to cheer on our Panthers! 🐾

Thank you to Coach Stephenson for coaching all these Panthers each week and for making this a great season!!! 🏃🏻🏃‍♀️
