I Asked My Students If Their Parents Read To Them; Their Responses Broke My Heart

“My dad doesn’t read to me because he said it’s boring.”

I’ll never forget those words coming out of my student’s mouth one day—or the way they hit me. Because they hurt.

Later that same day, I asked my class of 22 students, “How many of you have parents who read to you at night?”

Pray so intentionally in and over your home that people can feel it when they walk through your door. A home is more than walls and furniture—it is an atmosphere. It carries peace or tension, hope or heaviness, rest or unrest. When prayer becomes part of a home’s foundation, it shapes what is felt long before anything is said.

Praying over your home is an act of stewardship. It acknowledges that God is welcome, honored, and invited into every corner of your life. When you pray intentionally, you are not just speaking words—you are setting spiritual boundaries. You are asking God to cover your space with peace, protection, and purpose.

Intentional prayer means praying over what happens inside your home. Over conversations. Over relationships. Over rest and routines. Over laughter and conflict. It means asking God to guard hearts, soften attitudes, and bring understanding where emotions run high. Prayer prepares your home to be a place of grace instead of frustration, patience instead of pressure.

When prayer fills a home, peace becomes noticeable. People may not know why they feel calm, safe, or welcomed—but they feel it. God’s presence changes the atmosphere. It quiets anxiety. It brings comfort. It creates a sense of belonging that cannot be manufactured by design or decor.

Praying over your home also means covering it during unseen moments. Praying when no one is watching. Praying in the quiet hours. Praying over bedrooms, doorways, and tables. Asking God to protect what enters and what leaves. Asking Him to guard minds, rest, and relationships. These prayers matter, even when they are whispered and unseen.

Homes prayed over become places of refuge. They become spaces where burdens feel lighter and conversations feel safer. They become environments where healing can begin and joy can return. God works powerfully in spaces where He is welcomed consistently, not just occasionally.

Intentional prayer also invites God into everyday moments. It turns ordinary routines into sacred opportunities. Meals become moments of gratitude. Rest becomes renewal. Even challenges become chances to trust God together. Prayer reminds everyone under that roof that they are not navigating life alone.

Praying over your home does not mean it will be perfect. There will still be disagreements, stress, and hard days. But prayer gives your home a steady anchor. Instead of chaos ruling, peace leads. Instead of resentment growing, forgiveness finds space. God’s presence changes how difficulties are handled.

A prayed-over home also impacts those who enter it. Guests may feel listened to, valued, and at ease. Children may feel secure and supported. Even strangers may sense warmth they can’t explain. That atmosphere is not accidental—it is cultivated through consistent prayer and intentional faith.

Prayer invites God to do what we cannot. To heal what is broken. To strengthen what is weak. To restore what feels strained. When you pray over your home, you are entrusting God with what matters most—your relationships, your peace, and your daily life.

Pray for wisdom in your home.
Pray for unity in your home.
Pray for protection in your home.
Pray for joy, patience, and understanding.

And pray not just once, but often. Prayer shapes the unseen. Over time, it becomes part of the foundation—strong, steady, and life-giving.

When people walk into a home covered in prayer, they may not recognize it as prayer—but they will feel the peace. They will feel the calm. They will feel the difference.

Pray so intentionally in and over your home that God’s presence becomes unmistakable.
That love feels tangible.
That peace feels natural.
That faith feels alive.

Let your home be more than a place you live.
Let it be a place where God is welcomed, honored, and felt—by everyone who walks through the door.

🌱 Coming Soon: Little Steps with Jesus

Coming soon to Holy Mess, Toddler Stress — a gentle, faith-filled toddler activity designed for little hearts and growing families.

Little Steps with Jesus is a 3-month Saturday series created for toddlers ages 18–36 months, meeting every Saturday from 11AM–12PM EST.

This isn’t about memorizing or being taught who Jesus is.

It’s about experiencing Jesus — through play, music, movement, stories, creativity, and love.

Each week invites toddlers (and their caregivers) into simple moments that reflect:

Kindness
Presence
Joy
Safety
Love

This activity is part of the Holy Mess | Toddler Stress platform — a family friendly space that includes:

Holy Mess | Toddler Stress – Poetry Series

Saturday Flour — Series 1, Week 1

It’s Saturday,
and flour is everywhere—
on the counters,
on the floor,
in the spaces I’ll clean later.

Sweet potato waffles were the plan.
Love measured in cups and spoons,
good intentions dusted across the kitchen.

I pause in the middle of the mess
and realize—
this is what care looks like today.

God is here,
not waiting for quiet,
not asking for order,
but meeting me in the middle
of small hands and big effort.

The kitchen will be cleaned.
The day will move on.
But this moment—
this ordinary, flour-covered love—
is holy.
