Here at the top five most dangerous activities my Luminary students have done ahead of their college applications. And these are just my own students! What do you think… can you add any to the list?

One of the biggest misconceptions about the college process is that students are supposed to have everything figured out by the time applications begin.

The perfect major.
The perfect college list.
The perfect resume.
The perfect plan.

But most students are still learning who they are, what excites them, how they learn best, and what kind of future they want to build.

That’s normal.

In my experience, students grow the most when they feel supported, guided, and given room to explore thoughtfully, not pressured to have every answer immediately.

The college process should help students move forward with more clarity and confidence over time, not more fear.

That’s why strategy matters so much. A good plan helps families focus on what actually matters right now while giving students space to continue growing into themselves along the way.

At College Torch, that’s exactly what we aim to help families navigate together.

Many families start college planning with the tasks.

The essays.
The applications.
The college list.
The deadlines.

But the strongest college applications usually start earlier, with strategy and careful planning.

At College Torch, we use our L.I.G.H.T. method to help students build intentional college plans around:

• who they are
• what they care about
• how they take action now
• the impact they want to make
• where and how they'll thrive after high school

Because no two students should follow the exact same path.

The right college strategy can help your teen:
• feel more confident
• avoid missed opportunities and rerouted journeys
• reduce overwhelm and build a more authentic application

If you want help mapping out your teen’s college direction, timeline, and next steps with an expert, our 90-minute Intro Strategy Session is the best place to start.

DM us “STRATEGY” and we’ll respond with the booking link!

Colleges know all sorts of information about you! Yes, they’re tracking you, and they know what emails you open and what links you click. Instead of being THIS STUDENT (who sounds sweet but ended up in such an awkward situation) I recommend using “demonstrated interest” to your advantage to make a good impression and increase your chances of a or ! Comment if you want to know more about demonstrated interest. I love talking about all parts of the college process.

And…… Please don’t forget I’m hosting a free, awesome overview of the college process with strategies and stories of what’s worked for my past students THIS SUNDAY 3/29, so be sure to sign up for that!

Leave no stone unturned in your search for the best college fit! There’s a great kind of academic program that some universities offer, and you may not have heard of it. Co-op programs (short for cooperative education) give students the chance to earn money in college while working one or more semesters AND get credit for it. It’s great for a number of reasons, and it will make your resume shiny and wonderful for employers later. Only some universities, like Northeastern, University of Cincinnati, and Georgia Tech offer it, so if you’re interested, consider making this one of your priority points as you create your college list during your .
