This week, we are wrapping up our field activities for the Pulse Crop Survey Program by collecting soil samples from fields in Sheridan and Daniels counties to analyze for Aphanomyces root rot.
We also continue to observe severe anthracnose in a late-planted lentil field in Sheridan County.
High w**d pressure remains a concern in some lentil fields.

🎉 Congratulations to Vishal on a great first APS meeting!

Last week, Vishal attended his first American Phytopathological Society (APS) Annual Meeting in Rhode Island, where he presented his research on Ascochyta survival in chickpea residue over winter in Montana.

He also represented the APS Pacific Division in the 2026 Plant Diagnostic Bowl, where the team earned an impressive 2nd place! 🥈🌱
Beyond presenting his research and competing, Vishal had a great opportunity to connect with fellow Montana State University students and researchers.

🌡️ Heat stress is affecting crops across northeastern Montana. We're seeing leaf curling, distortion, lodging, scorching, smaller pods, and premature drying in many fields as crops respond to the hot, dry conditions.
We're also detecting more lentil fields with anthracnose in Valley, Roosevelt, and Sheridan counties.

🚨 Anthracnose has been detected in lentil fields in Sheridan, Daniels and Roosevelt counties.

Scout your fields for anthracnose symptoms. If the disease is present, discuss disease severity and the potential benefits of a fungicide application with your crop consultant before making a management decision.

During this week's field visits for the MSU-EARC Pulse Crop Survey Program, we observed increased severity of bacterial and Septoria blights in pea fields across Sheridan and Roosevelt counties, while Ascochyta blight remained moderate.

We also noted increasing numbers of pea aphids and grasshoppers, though levels were still below the economic threshold.

Visible grasshopper feeding damage was observed in one soybean field in Roosevelt County, as shown in our previous post. This highlights the importance of continued monitoring, particularly along field edges and adjacent grassy areas.
