It seems like an unlikely story, an English woman running a ballet school in a South African township, but Fiona Sargeant is not a normal woman and the school she runs is not a normal ballet school.
Zolani, a township in South Africa, is marked by extreme poverty and inequality. For children growing up there, the future holds little hope.
But this school has done much more than teach ballet classes. Through ballet, Fiona has not just given the young students purpose, self-discipline and exercise, but through her selfless work, lives have been changed. Some of her former students are now dancing on scholarships in New York and London. What Fiona has given the children of Zolani through her ballet school is hope.
Fiona, once a professional ballet dancer, teaches these children classical and contemporary ballet 5 days a week. She provides them with meals after dance class, which may be the only food they have, and facilitates their homework. She drives them around in her small car, as there is no other transport available, organizes performances and fundraising events, and above all, she offers them the opportunity to go beyond ‘trying to survive’, to make them aware that dance can be their ticket out of poverty. Nobody could have given more to try and improve the lives of children living with such hardships.
But in 2016, at the age of just 51, Fiona was diagnosed with cancer. In February of this year, Fiona received the devastating news that her cancer was inoperable.
Fiona is an incredible woman, and she has come to peace with the fact that she has just weeks to live, but what breaks her heart is that without her super-human efforts, the school will close.
This is where we can help!
Together, our plan is to raise enough money to keep Dancescape operating and helping children achieve their dreams long after Fiona is gone.
So let's grant Fiona's last wish! Let's ensure that the school and her legacy will continue after she has gone. And in doing that, we can keep the dreams of all the children that go to the school alive. For this is more than a dance school – this is a place of hope.

Anyone pick up three costumes at the high school on Monday? I cannot find my kids' costumes. I am guessing that someone saw them and grabbed them, but I was just checking. It would be in two garment bags and one in a clear bag. Any word would be great. Thanks!

Adapted by Ian Wolfgang Hinz from the novel by Charles Dickens. A timeless Christmas classic for the whole family. The story of Scrooge and Tiny Tim, a festive tale of redemption and compassion.

What a great Costume Dress-up and Watch Week we had this past week! Our students definitely got into the Halloween spirit and their families enjoyed watching them show what they’ve been learning during first quarter! Thank you to all of our amazing families who make sure the students get to class every week, and to our incredible dancers who work hard learning all different kinds of dance! We have fun every week, but the addition of costumes and families attending made this week extra special!
We still have spots in some classes and enrollment is still open for any child, teen, or adult who wants to try something new, or come back to dance after a break. We love sharing our passion with the community and we’d love to see you in class!

(Just please make sure that your dancer is able to dance in their costume and any loose pieces or accessories are taken off before class.)
Next week is also the FINAL week of first quarter. Second quarter begins right away on Monday October 31st. No need to re-register as we automatically enroll your student in the following session, unless you want to add or change any classes. Please contact the office with any questions.

Auditions for A Christmas Carol! SDC will be featured in this show!
A Christmas Carol returns to The Historic Sidney Theatre December 8th to 11th! If you would like to be a part of this production we will be holding open auditions at the theatre! For these auditions either come with a prepared monologue or an excerpt from the script can be provided for you. All roles are open!

Did you know we offer daytime dance classes during the week and on Saturday mornings? Perfect for homeschoolers and little ones not yet in school! Studies show that early exposure to structured activities in a welcoming environment with knowledgeable instructors can help students perform better academically as well as socially. With focus on fine motor skills, body coordination, peer engagement, and developing active listening skills, these classes can be a huge benefit to young learners. Classes are between 30 and 45 minutes long and currently include pre ballet, ballet I, and acrobatics. Other classes such as tap, jazz, and hip hop may be offered depending on interest!

We welcomed a special guest teacher last night to work with our students on some specific partnering movements. Lifts, and turns, and balances, oh my! Thank you, Michael Eikenberry for helping teach our students how it’s done!
This level of intensive training is achieved through dedication and lots of hard work. Ask any of these dancers how much effort it takes to attempt these skills, and they will tell you it’s not only a lot to remember, but a lot of trust in your partner, and confidence in your own abilities. Dance helps us grow these talents and gives every dancer something to strive for. Perfection doesn’t exist here, but we sure try to get there every day!
