Words can both build and break. Words that pick at children, at what they say, how they dress, what they did, what they didn’t do, the way they answered, the way they didn’t answer … too many of these picky picky words can break a child’s spirit and self esteem. This meme reminds us to use more words that build than those that break. Look for the goodness in children, affirm the helpful things, note the kindness to the dog, the way they helped their sister, that they picked up the shoes, they shut the garage. We will notice a measurable change in ‘climate’ in our homes when we increase the ratio of genuine positive appreciation instead of picking holes in everything. All of this is true for adults as well as children.
