What an amazing community in which we live! This community SHOWS UP for all non-profits. Thanks to so many of you out there for supporting our work with children each and every year! We had an amazing Match Day and Giving Tuesday...we appreciate each and every one of you!
Some of the kiddos got to help paint a canvas for Ms Sara’s office today!!
Splatter paint for the win!!
The Little Birdie song is our circle time opening song. The kids have been requesting that they do the singing by themselves, and the staff have been rating them on a scale of one to ten. We have pretty high standards! 😂
There were some “glitches” in the website today if you tried to put in a donation with a credit card. The Community Foundation of Shelby County Ohio will be taking donations online until noon tomorrow, Wed 11/30. Thanks for giving!!
TOMORROW is the day! . Wilma Valentine Childcare is part the Community Foundation of Shelby County's Match Day. Wilma Valentine is using their Match Day proceeds this year to help offset their cost in wages. Staff is the backbone to their organization and they want to assure that kids have a great experience and parents can go to work without worry.
We made adorable torn paper owls yesterday using cup cake liners for the eyes. I made a demo owl for them, explained how I did it, and turned them loose. The only real discussion we had was about the general shape of an owl (oval, of course). Most of the owls were pretty abstract in shape, which is great! But this guy! He is a problem-solving master! He decided on his own that since his hat was oval shaped, he could use it was a template! So smart!!!
Rainy fall afternoon means running and playing in the gym!!
We lucked out with the most BEAUTIFUL day for our service project on Sunday! After talking for weeks about being kind and giving back, we put our words into action! Pirates with a Purpose is a project we have done in the past and brought back again this year. Our family volunteers met at one of the WVC family’s house and then “looted” their neighborhood for items to donate to New Choices in Sidney. We collected an amazing amount of toys, games and books to donate! Thank you so much to the families and staff that helped us pull this off!
This is a fantastic kid friendly Halloween event at Brukner Nature Center. There are usually indoor activities and face painting and then a guide led walking portion where the kiddos get to learn about the areas nocturnal animals. This is a yearly Halloween tradition in my family (Sara).
Yesterday we did a practice pirate hunt for our Pirates With a Purpose service project that we are doing Sunday! We are teaching the kids that giving can be as fun as getting. We will be collecting donated items from the Shelby County Board of DD and Shelby Hills today. On Sunday we are meeting at a local neighborhood (pre-arranged, of course) and looking for X’s in windows that will let us know we need to stop and pick up items. All donations will be given to New Choices in Sidney. We are so proud of how much the children have embraced this plan and how excited they are to gift the donations to others!
We had an exciting visit from our neighbors today! The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department grew and delivered a ton of pumpkins! All of the children got to choose a pumpkin to take home, and even received a rubber duck and badge sticker! Thank you SCSD!!
Some of our more impressive “getty” faces! 😂
Cooler weather means campfires!!
Reading is so important for our children! It helps teach them language skills and literacy, it allows them to use their imaginations, and gives adults the chance to get some quality bonding time! It helps develop their social emotional skills and teaches them empathy. If you are looking for new books to read with your children, visit your local library! They are free to borrow and it is so fun for children to browse and select for themselves!
It’s the start of a new year. That means we have new names to remember and new people to get to know. ”What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a great way to start a meaningful conversation….with kids or adults!

This year Wilma Valentine Childcare celebrates 30 years. Shelby County United Way, Inc. has supported us for nearly all of those years. Please support the 2022 United Way Campaign!
We read such a wonderful book today! It is “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud. It taught the kids that every person has an invisible bucket that is filled by kind words and actions. They learned that our buckets can also be emptied when people do mean, unkind things. It explains perfectly for preschoolers how to be kind and empathetic. After we read the book I showed them my huge sign with buckets dippers on it (children making bad choices, unkind words, etc). Then we covered it with bright, kind pictures and words. It is so beautiful! I should have taken a complete before and after picture….next time! Enjoy the quick video!
The Community Foundation of Shelby County has been a great supporter of Wilma Valentine Childcare. We received a grant from them later in the spring for new toys and storage containers. The kids have loved playing with these new toys. We received so many books and toys that we just couldn't get a picture of everything! Thank you to The Community Foundation for for helping ensure our kids are learning and busy while they are at childcare!
We forgot all about posting pictures last week, so here are pictures from Anna Community park, and Ft Loramie Community park. Both were WONDERFUL and we highly recommend you visit them!
When the weather cancels our field trip we make time to get outside and play. Took a nice walk and attempted to get a group picture or two!!
More adorable kids with equally adorable baby chicks videos!
…..and pictures, because cuteness overload!
A good day in childcare...when kids get to play with NEW toys! We wrote a grant to the Community Foundation of Shelby County Ohio and were able to purchase so many new toys, books, and storage tubs! A huge thanks to the Community Foundation of Shelby County for supporting Wilma Valentine Childcare!
We can officially say that our chicken hatching is done. The extension office delivered 5 eggs in the incubator, and we had 2 chicks hatch. The kids have loved this experience so much that we may have to do it again this fall! Meet Fluffy and Puffy, the (temporary) mascots of Wilma Valentine! 🐥🐥
Wegerzyn Gardens is a beautiful oasis in Dayton. The kids explored lots of flowers, water, musical instruments, a pond, a hedge maze and fountains all surrounded by the beautiful flower gardens at Wegerzen. A must visit with you during kids!
One of our partner preschool programs, Shelby Hills Preschool where we are located, is in need of an itinerant teacher. This is a teaching position that has quite a bit of flexibility and allows someone to work with the awesome Shelby Hills Preschool team and also many other preschool providers in the Shelby County community. In this position you can do some work from home, create your own schedule, work more one-on-one or in small groups with preschoolers, and be under STRS. If you don't have a preschool teaching license, we can work with you on the process. Call Nancy at 937-658-6763 to learn more about this great opportunity!
