πŸ”οΈ Executive Team Retreat at Boyne Mountain πŸ”οΈ

Great institutions are built by healthy teams that enjoy working together while staying laser-focused on the mission.

I thank God every day for my Executive Team. I try to tell them often how much I appreciate them and how proud I am of the work we are doing together. Our annual Executive Team Retreat gives me the opportunity to do more than tell them. It gives me the opportunity to show them.

This year, we spent a few days together at Boyne Mountain. This time together is important to me. It gives us an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day demands of the college, spend meaningful time together, reflect on where we have been, celebrate what we have accomplished, and think intentionally about where we are going next.

I am incredibly proud of Riki Jensen, Lisa Lund, Francisco Ramirez, Theresa Rowland, and Kevin Wagenmaker, and grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside each of them. They are talented leaders, great teammates, and even better people. πŸ’šπŸ’›

🍁 When the Flag Is Up, the Sap Is Boiling!

There is something pretty sweet happening at Montcalm Community College!

The Sugar Bush at MCC is a great example of what hands-on learning looks like. Our students help tap maple trees right here on our Sidney campus, collect the sap, and turn it into MCC maple syrup. They also bring their creativity to the project, developing artwork, branding, and promotional materials that help tell the Sugar Bush story. 🍁

What began in 2024 with just 10 tapped trees has continued to grow. More than 75 maple trees were tapped for our collaboration with Rockford Brewing Company to create Sap House Ale, a unique maple beer made using sap collected right here at MCC. 🍺

The Sugar Bush connects learning across history, chemistry, agriculture, environmental science, business, marketing, and commercial design. It is experiential education at its best: students learning by doing, creating, collaborating, and seeing their work come to life.

And here is another pretty sweet fact: MCC is one of only four colleges in Michigan and 27 colleges in the country with an active Sugar Bush operation.

So, if you are ever on the Sidney campus and see the flag flying at The Sap House, you know what it means: The sap is boiling! 🍁πŸ”₯

Finding Joy in the Leadership Journey 😊

Being a college president is hard work.

Every day involves decisions that affect students, employees, the institution, and the communities we serve. Leadership requires courage, discernment, and a commitment to doing what is right, even when it is difficult.

But I have also learned that great leaders make room for joy.

At the MCCA Summer Conference, Shayla and I decided to wear a different themed shirt each day. πŸ˜„ It was a simple way to bring a few smiles, start conversations, and remind ourselves that while our work is serious, we do not always have to take ourselves so seriously.

Leadership is not only about carrying responsibility. It is also about creating moments that build relationships, strengthen culture, and make the journey enjoyable.

Work hard. Lead well. Have fun along the way. πŸ’šπŸ’›

⚾ Leadership sometimes feels a lot like throwing out the first pitch.

I had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the West Michigan Whitecaps game, and I will admit... it was both exciting and terrifying.

With everyone watching, there was only one thing to do: trust the preparation, take a deep breath, and throw the ball.

Thankfully, it was a strike. Right down the middle. Well... maybe just a little high. πŸ˜„

That moment reminded me that leadership often feels the same way. There are times when the spotlight is on you, the outcome is uncertain, and you simply have to step forward with confidence. You will not always throw a perfect pitch, but leadership is not about perfection. It is about having the courage to step onto the mound when your team is counting on you.

I am grateful to the West Michigan Whitecaps for the opportunity and for a memorable reminder that the greatest growth often happens just outside our comfort zone. Every leader will face moments that are both exciting and intimidating. The key is to embrace the opportunity, trust your preparation, and have the courage to throw your best pitch.

⚾️ Employee Appreciation Day at the Ballpark! πŸ’šπŸ’›

Our MCC employees enjoyed a beautiful afternoon on the porch at the West Michigan Whitecaps game, complete with great baseball, great food, and even better company. 🌞🌭⚾

One of the greatest privileges of serving as president is celebrating the incredible people who make Montcalm Community College such a special place. While the president often receives the recognition, the reality is that it is our outstanding administration, faculty, and staff who make our mission come to life every single day.

I am deeply grateful to serve alongside such talented, passionate, and caring people. Your commitment to our students, our communities, and one another is what makes MCC exceptional.

Thank you for all that you do. You are the heart of Montcalm Community College. πŸ’šπŸ’›

Happy 250th Birthday, America! β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™

I was proud to join fellow community leaders in Greenville, Michigan, for the public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8 as part of the America250 celebration. It was an honor to join thousands of individuals across the nation and around the world in reading and reflecting on the enduring ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. πŸ“œ

As someone who has dedicated my life to education and community, I believe our greatest responsibility is to preserve the blessings of freedom, strengthen our families and communities, and leave our nation better than we found it.

May freedom, hope, and opportunity continue to guide our nation for generations to come. πŸ¦…

We have been awarded $5,874,600 in State of Michigan capital outlay funding to renovate and expand the Les Morford Instructional Building into the future MCC Student Success Center. πŸ—οΈ

This exciting investment will create a welcoming space where students can access the resources and support they need to succeed.

The Student Success Center will serve as a centralized hub for academic support, advising, career services, and student engagement, helping students connect with the resources they need from enrollment through graduation. πŸŽ“

β›³ A Great Day for Centurion Athletics! β˜€οΈ

We enjoyed a beautiful day at our home course, Glenkerry Golf Course, as 84 golfers came together for the annual MCC Athletics Golf Outing.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our participants, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters, the outing raised nearly $14,000 in support of Centurion Athletics, helping us continue to create opportunity through education, one student at a time. πŸ’šπŸ’›

πŸŒ… Date Night at The Deck ❀️

After a full day of productive meetings, there is nothing better than a date night with Shayla. We enjoyed beautiful views of Lake Michigan, perfect weather, great food, live music, and the laid-back atmosphere at in Muskegon.

Grateful for moments like these that help recharge for the work ahead.
