Learning Through Play at Tiny Sprouts Market!
Tiny Sprouts infants through toddlers stepped into the exciting world of grocery shopping through a hands-on dramatic-play experience: Tiny Sprouts Market!
What began with our students’ love of pushing strollers grew into a meaningful learning opportunity. Teachers followed their interest and helped children explore what else people push, where they go, and why. Before opening our market, students enjoyed books about food, grocery stores, shopping, and preparing meals. These stories introduced new vocabulary and helped them begin connecting their classroom learning to experiences they may have with their own families.
Once the Tiny Sprouts Market opened, students became shoppers, cashiers, baggers, and helpful friends. They browsed the aisles, selected groceries, pushed carts and strollers, waited in line, scanned items, paid for their food, and packed their bags. It was wonderful to see children who were already familiar with grocery-store routines confidently take the lead, while their classmates watched, learned, and quickly joined in.
While small groups explored the market, other students participated in grocery-themed sensory play. Hidden among kinetic sand were miniature food and market items for children to dig, search for, identify, and share with teachers and friends.
This playful experience supported so much more than pretend shopping! Children practiced:
✨ Language and communication through naming foods and sharing discoveries
✨ Social-emotional development through cooperative play, confidence, and observing peers
✨ Fine- and gross-motor skills through digging, reaching, bending, carrying, pushing, and maneuvering carts
✨ Cognitive skills through sorting, making choices, following routines, and understanding cause and effect
✨ Social skills such as waiting, turn-taking, problem-solving, and working alongside classmates
