A woman was diagnosed with breast cancer amid her late husband's struggles with a fatal brain tumor. The joint health issues inspired Mary-Ellen Taplin's oncology work, she tells PEOPLE exclusively.

🎓 Meet your student speakers for UMass Chan Medical School’s 2026 Commencement! Nursing PhD student William “Bill” Mar, RN, MSN; MD/MBA student Suhas Suddala; and PhD candidate Humberto Ochoa will represent their peers from the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing, T.H. What a joy to welcome over 200 alumni and guests back to campus for Reunion 2026—especially meaningful after the postponed 2021 celebration. We were honored to celebrate the Class of 1976’s 50th Reunion, only the third in UMass Chan history!

Highlights included: an inspiring talk from Alumni Distinguished Service Award recipient Mary-Ellen Taplin, MD '86, R'90, a candid student panel, campus tours, an update from Dean Flotte, and time to reconnect at class dinners.

UMass Chan is grateful for the generosity of the Class of 1986 as members prepare to return to campus on Saturday, May 2, to celebrate their 40th Reunion.

Class member Mark A. Goldberg, MD’86, and his wife, Nancy, recently endowed a scholarship at UMass Chan that will provide financial assistance to deserving medical students, empowering them to pursue their chosen paths in medicine with less concern about educational debt.

With gratitude for the affordable, high-quality medical education that helped Mark launch his distinguished career at the forefront of new health care technologies—and inspired by the Medical School’s enduring focus on primary care—the couple is committed to advancing the institution’s mission.

UMass President Marty Meehan just announced that David McManus, MD’02, MSc’12, will be the next chancellor of UMass Chan Medical School: https://direc.to/o2A_

Dr. McManus, the Richard M. Haidack Professor in Medicine, chair and professor of medicine, will succeed Chancellor Michael F. Collins in July after Collins retires as chancellor.
