The Federal Department of Transportation is tasked with pursuing more than twenty separate “national goals,” many of which conflict with each other. That means you can make the argument that almost any project meets one of these goals, even if you’re destroying a neighborhood to save drivers 3.2 minutes of travel time, like in the case of Shreveport, Louisiana.
We need a return to the laser focus and careful ex*****on that made the Interstate Highway System possible. That starts with changing the funding system that incentivizes harmful projects that drain massive amounts of funding and fail to deliver returns.
