Your Opportunity Starts Here! In 1967, Southern University at Shreveport made its humble beginnings here, on what is now called the Martin Luther King, Jr.
Campus. From the beginning, the priority has been to aid people from diverse backgrounds to improve the quality of their lives and become contributing participants in this community's cultural and economic development. As the needs of the Shreveport/Bossier City metropolitan area have changed over the years, so has the Southern University at Shreveport campus and its role as an active participant in raising the level of excellence for the community.

Diamond Whitaker, a SUSLA Engineering Technology Major, was awarded the Frank Taylor, Jr. Memorial Scholarship today. Ms. Cheryl Taylor, SUSLA Chief Advancement Officer, was on hand to present the annual scholarship award named in honor of her late son and SUSLA graduate.
Diamond described the scholarship as an opportunity that will assist her as she continues to pursue her dreams. She also emphasized how impactful the BSTEM department has been on her educational journey. “The faculty and staff are always willing to help you and make accommodations if needed,” said Diamond during her acceptance speech.
The late Frank Taylor, Jr. enrolled at Southern University at Shreveport in the summer of 2002. During his two-year matriculation there, he served as the Freshman Class President, Student Government Association President, and was a member of the Southern University Board of Supervisors – making his voice heard across all of the campuses.
Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, SUSLA Chancellor, expressed her sincere appreciation for Southern University Shreveport Foundation’s impact at SUSLA through scholarships as well as Frank’s momentous contributions he and his family have made to SUSLA, including voting for approval to construct Jaguar Courtyard Apartments, which offers SUSLA students on-campus residential options as they reach their academic goals.
SUSLA Welcomes New Board Members and Chairman at the Southern University Systems January Board Meeting. The SU Board of Supervisors is vested with the responsibility via the Constitution and Louisiana State Revised Statutes for the management and supervision of the institutions of higher education, statewide agricultural programs, and other programs that comprise the Southern University System.
Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, SUSLA Chancellor, extended a warm welcome during the board meeting to the new chairman, Atty. Tony Clayton and all of the board members.
Sheriff Henry Whitehorn is one of six individuals appointed by Governor Landry to the Board. On Friday, January 17, Whitehorn was sworn in as the new Southern University System board member representing the 4th Congressional District.

The Southern University Museum of Art at Shreveport (SUMAS) is thrilled to announce the opening of PRISMATIC, a solo exhibition by acclaimed artist Hillary Frazier. The exhibition will run from January 16 through March 13, 2025, with an opening reception on January 16 from 5-7 PM. This event is free and open to the public.
Hillary Frazier is a Louisiana-based artist known for her distinctive style influenced by renowned artists such as Alphonse Mucha, Fiona Staples, Skottie Young, and Jamie Hewlett. PRISMATIC showcases Frazier’s compelling works, seamlessly blending traditional illustration, hand-drawn typography, and narrative imagery. Her pieces often feature empowered women, capturing the nuanced balance between strength and vulnerability, offering a multifaceted exploration of femininity.

Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) Chancellor Dr. Aubra J. Gantt attended the first 2025 meeting of the Manufacturing Managers Council (MMC) in Shreveport, Louisiana. SUSLA is a proud, active, and contributing member of the MMC, with Dr. John K. Galiotos, Dean of Workforce Development and Associate Professor of Chemistry, representing the university in this critical partnership.
This meeting held special significance due to the presence of State Senator – District 38, the Honorable Mr. Thomas Pressly, as the guest speaker. Senator Pressly’s presentation, titled “What’s Happening in Louisiana Today”, highlighted the state’s economic growth, updates on impactful projects, taxation, and critical human capital development initiatives. His well-articulated insights underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing Louisiana’s economy and workforce.
Dr. Gantt and Senator Pressly engaged in a productive and forward-looking discussion on topics including Aviation Technology, workforce development initiatives, facilities for education and training, and SUSLA’s impactful role in training and educating the communities of Northwest Louisiana. Senator Pressly praised SUSLA’s efforts to meet the region's workforce needs and expressed his unwavering commitment to supporting the university’s continued growth and success.
In addition to this conversation, Dr. Gantt networked with several CEOs and business leaders in attendance. These industry leaders echoed their support for SUSLA and pledged their readiness to help the university expand its influence and capabilities in the region, further cementing SUSLA’s vital role in workforce development and economic progress.
Together, SUSLA and MMC are driving innovation and talent development to strengthen the regional economy.

Southern University at Shreveport came together at the Faculty & Staff Institute for Spring 2025. The purpose of the Institute is to provide a forum in which respective employees are able to learn and discuss new ideas as we prepare for a new semester.
Presenters from various departments led sessions to gain new skills, reflect and refine best practices and procedures, and enhance their ability to better serve students.
During the sessions designed to foster a culture of continuous improvement, Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, Chancellor, welcomed SUS General Attorney Corrine Blache, who spoke on the importance of adhering to core policies and completing mandatory training.
Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, Chancellor, shared, "The Spring 2025 semester will be a period of change at both the campus and system levels. I am committed to working collaboratively, deliberately, and tenaciously with you to achieve great things at this institution. Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) joined Calvary Baptist Church for their "Forty Hour Prayer Vigil" to usher in the New Year. During the Grambling and Southern Alumni Worship Hour, SUSLA’s own Calvin Lester, Director of Multicultural and International Affairs and President of the Southern University Alumni Federation (SUAF), led a prayer for the well-being of the administration, staff, and students of both esteemed institutions.
Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, SUSLA Chancellor, was warmly welcomed and recognized by the ministers and leaders present. The event also featured recent graduates from SUSLA, Southern University and A&M College (SUBR), and Grambling State University (GSU) as they celebrated the new year alongside their fellow alumni and showcased their talents during the program.
