Female physicians increasing in the country

As we wrap up Women's History Month, we'd like to share this article featuring Class of 1988 alumna, Dr. Mitra Green, a pediatric hospitalist at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LA.

“I think it’s very important, even for the women that are in medicine, to encourage younger women to go into this field,” said Dr. Green.

Thank you, Dr. Green, for highlighting the importance of women in the medical field!

Female physicians increasing in the country Female doctors are more common now, but it wasn’t always that way.

We can all be proud of the way that LSU Health Shreveport and the Center for Emerging Viral Threats have made a difference for so many in our community.

Thank you to the Shreveport City Council for recognizing the pandemic response by LSU Health Shreveport which has led Louisiana’s response with novel clinical therapies, robust testing and vaccination clinics. The Center for Emerging Viral Threats has played an irreplaceable role in the LSUHS pandemic response having processed almost 300,000 test samples and administered over 40,000 doses of vaccine.
Chancellor G. E. Ghali accepted the proclamation on behalf of all those involved in the pandemic response with a special thanks to Dr. Chris Kevil, Vice Chancellor for Research. The proclamation was presented by Councilman James Green and Mayor Adrian Perkins.
With today, March 9, being the one year anniversary since Louisiana’s first confirmed COVID case occurred, this recognition was timely and provided a time to reflect on all that has been accomplished and the exceedingly important role of an academic medical center during a public health emergency.

Dr. Hodges received her medical degree and completed her med/peds residency and infectious disease fellowship at LSU Health Shreveport.

We are pleased to spotlight Cassidy Horton, Class of 2022, as the inaugural recipient of The Sandra and Jerry Martin Endowed Scholarship for Medical Students.

Since she was a child growing up in small-town Haughton, LA, Cassidy knew she wanted to pursue a career that would allow her to help others and give back to her community. Now in her third year of medical school at LSU Health Shreveport, her life and studies have been impacted in more ways than one by the generosity of LSU Health Shreveport alumna and donor, Dr. Cindy Martin ’98. Dr. Martin's scholarship is the first student scholarship endowment to be established at LSU Health Shreveport by an alumnus/alumna. It is designed to provide support for students from rural communities in North Louisiana.

“Having these additional funds has relieved such a burden for me over the years. There are a lot of additional expenses that you don’t always account for when you start, like study programs and board exams. The scholarship has helped me cover a lot of those costs,” said Cassidy.

Scholarships at LSU Health Shreveport provide students like Cassidy the opportunity to pursue a career in medicine without the burden of student debt.

Phillip Rozeman: What I tell my friends about the vaccine - BIZ - Northwest Louisiana

Check out this excellent opinion piece from LSU Health Shreveport alum (Class of 1979) and local cardiologist, Dr. Phillip Rozeman!

"By taking the vaccine, I lessen the constant worry I have of giving the virus to someone else. I don’t want to continue to cringe when my granddaughter wants a hug and a kiss. I don’t want to transmit the virus to any of my friends or family. And since most of my patients are vulnerable with chronic medical conditions, I certainly don’t want any of them to get the virus from me." - Dr. Rozeman

bizmagsb.com The first thing I tell my friends about the vaccine is that I am going to get it when it’s available to me. By the time this opinion piece is published, I will be among the healthcare providers to be vaccinated. Although personal protection equipment (PPE) is appreciated, I will be glad to be se ....
