Deadly Start to the Summer on Louisiana’s Roads

As we enter into the weekend, Louisiana State Police would like to take a moment and reflect on a deadly week of crashes that we have experienced. Since Tuesday, June 1st through Friday, June 4th, Troopers across the state have investigated 10 fatal crashes resulting in 13 deaths. Impairment, distracted driving, and speeding continues to be a contributing factor in these crashes. This week, Troopers have seen multiple lives ended and families heartbroken due to poor decisions made behind the steering wheel of a vehicle.

As Troopers, we diligently enforce traffic laws, especially hazardous moving violations, that are likely to cause serious injury or death. We know first-hand that impaired driving, not wearing a seat belt, not utilizing proper child restraints, speeding, and distracted driving are major contributing factors in deadly crashes.

As the school year ends and the summer months begin, you will see an increase of traffic on the roadways. This increase in traffic volume leads to more congested highways. We ask that motorists remain patient, follow at safe distances, and drive courteously.

Exercise safe driving practices for you and your loved ones. Help us by educating those around you about safe and responsible driving practices. As Troopers, we are dedicated to our mission of providing a safe environment for all families. Your safety and the safety of others depend on the choices you make.

If someone should observe unsafe or impaired drivers, please report them to your nearest Troop by dialing *577 (LSP) from a cell phone or your local law enforcement agency.

STATEWIDE NEWS RELEASE
May 28, 2021

Click It or Ticket This Memorial Day Weekend

The American Automobile Association predicts more than 37 million people will travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day weekend. Nine out of ten travelers are projected to drive to their destinations. With this in mind, the Louisiana State Police would like to offer these travel tips:
• Inspect your vehicle and ensure tire air pressure and fluids are at the proper level
• Avoid distractions behind the wheel and pay attention to traffic around you
• Watch for motorcycles as many riders will venture out this weekend
• With more traffic than normal, allow extra time to get to your destination
• Speeding increases the likelihood of a crash as well as the severity of a crash
• Designate a sober driver before going anywhere alcohol will be consumed
• Never drive impaired or get in a vehicle with an impaired driver
• Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained

A 2019 study conducted by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission showed only 68 percent of vehicle occupants in Louisiana wore a seat belt in the back seat. In addition, pickup truck occupants in Louisiana are 10 percent less likely to wear a seat belt than occupants of other types of vehicles. The laws of physics are not suspended simply because you are in the back seat of a vehicle or in a pickup truck. Many pickup truck occupants are killed or seriously injured each year simply because they chose not to wear a seat belt.

Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day or night. Law enforcement agencies throughout our state are participating in the national Click It or Ticket campaign through June 6th and will be ticketing vehicle occupants who choose not to wear a seat belt. Vehicle occupants are encouraged to take a moment to buckle up. It could mean the difference between life or death in the event of a crash.

Motorists who observe impaired or reckless drivers are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) or to dial 911.

Traffic information is available online at 511la.org, by using the 511la app, or by dialing 511 anywhere in Louisiana.

Louisiana State Police

The Louisiana State Police would like to highlight 2020 National Teen Driver Safety Week by giving you some items to think about and discuss with your young drivers. Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens between 15 and 18 years of age. Here are a few ways you can significantly lower the chances of being involved in a fatal crash.

1. Do not drive impaired- Driving under the influence of anything such as alcohol and any illicit, prescription, and over-the-counter drugs degrades a driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle.

2. Wear your seatbelt- Being properly restrained will greatly reduce injuries you can receive during a crash as well as prevent being ejected from the vehicle.

3. Eliminate distractions- Every other task that takes your eyes and attention from the roadway prevents you from seeing problems before they occur. Don’t text, use and electronic device, play with the radio, continually adjust the climate controls, put on makeup, or eat while driving. Parents, surveys have shown that a large portion of text messaging and cell phone use while driving is contact between you and your teen driver.

4. Drive the speed limit- Speed limits are placed on the conditions and location of the roadway. The faster a vehicle is going on impact, the more severe the injuries are for the vehicle occupants.

5. Limit passengers in the vehicle- Passengers in a vehicle can be a constant source of distraction for the driver. Follow the states graduated driver’s license law about how many passengers. Unless accompanied by a licensed adult, may not transport more than one passenger under age 21 and who is not an immediate family member, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
