Going to tutor elementary/middle school kids right after a full day of teaching high school can be A LOT… but when I say it’s heartwarming and rewarding!

My brain definitely has to switch gears but these four beautiful girls made it so worth it. They were open, respectful, and ready to learn. We worked on combining like terms, solving equations and even brushed up on math vocabulary.

They listened, asked questions, and stayed engaged the entire time. No attitudes, no issues! Just genuine effort and love for learning… which I needed, because my high school students gave me so much attitude today. 😅

Order of operations is one of the most important math skills students learn toward the end of elementary school and keep using all through middle and high school. We remember it by using the acronym PEMDAS.

PEMDAS helps you remember the correct order of operations, and students will see it on just about every standardized test!

The part most people misunderstand is that multiplication and division are interchangeable and so are addition and subtraction. You have to go left to right (whichever comes first) just like when you read.

Once you know how to follow the correct order, solving problems becomes so much easier. No matter how big or small the numbers are. 💪

✏️MATH MONDAY✏️

Before students can master multi-digit multiplication, they have to be confident with their basic facts: 1 through 12.
In this example, I broke down 47 × 3 step by step:
• Multiply each single digit (7 × 3 = 21, carry the 2)
• Then multiply the next digit (4 × 3 = 12)
• Add the carried number (12 + 2 = 14)

It’s really just single-digit multiplication and addition!
Once students understand that, multi-digit problems don’t seem so scary. That’s why learning your multiplication facts early makes everything in math smoother later on! 💪✨
