Another great lecture at the Noel Collection...

If you enjoyed or missed our last lecture, we have a new lecture happening in a week as part of our Noel Lecture Series. Kara Dixon Vuic will be discussing:

"Entertaining the American Military at War"

When Marilyn Monroe visited American troops in Korea in 1954, she nearly started a riot. She also continued a long tradition of women entertaining wartime troops. This talk will explore how the US military utilized women in wartime recreation and entertainment programs throughout the 20thcentury. While highlighting women’s experiences in different wars and in different theaters, we’ll ask if their work was merely a sideshow to war, or something more essential?

Dr. Kara Dixon Vuic is the inaugural LCpl. Benjamin W. Schmidt Professor of War, Conflict, and Society in Twentieth-Century America at Texas Christian University. Her book "Officer, Nurse, Woman: The Army Nurse Corps in the Vietnam War" won the Lavinia L. Dock Book Award from the American Association for the History of Nursing and was a Finalist for the Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award. She advised and appeared in the PBS documentary "USO: For the Troops" and the TLC series "Who Do You Think You Are?" and created an oral history collection for the Vietnam Center and Archive at Texas Tech University.
