Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
Have you ever been reluctant to give because you don't think your contribution would have enough impact? Let's take a page out of Saint Patrick's book and bring people together. Saint Patrick was known to bring communities together to make a change. We can do the same with giving circles. Get a group and pool your resources, then decide, together, where to donate. Jeffrey Goodman grew up in Shreveport. A graduate of Captain Shreve, Goodman completed his studies at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis. While attending Washington University, Goodman was a member of the NCAA Division III Tennis Team and took home second team All-Conference honors at the end of his sophomore season. In April of 2019, Goodman became the Director of Marketing and Development for the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana. While at the YMCA, Goodman has leveraged his sales background to grow the organization’s donor base while serving an instrumental role in two of its current growth projects – the new branch at Camp Forbing Town Center and the Youth Baseball and Softball Complex. Additionally, Goodman has led the initiative to expand the YMCA’s role as a community center by spearheading “Shreveport-Bossier: My City, My Community, My Home.” The new initiative consists of weekly podcast interviews and periodic community panels.

🔦2023 Capacity Building Cohort Spotlight🔦

Tracy McComic (she/her)

🟡🟣🟡🟣🟡🟣🟡🟣

Tracy McComic is the Executive Director of Noel Community Arts Program. Tracy knows first-hand the transformative power of the arts and is passionate about developing opportunities to help as many people as possible experience for themselves the power of the arts.

Tracy spent 7 years as a high school classroom English teacher before venturing into the entrepreneurial world as an artist and small business owner of her metal clay jewelry business, Wired & Sassy, LLC, that was established in 2013. Additionally, before taking on the role of a nonprofit director, Tracy was an art instructor for Shreveport Regional Arts Council and Noel Community Arts Program.

Tracy holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and alternate teacher’s certification from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. After leaving her classroom teacher position, Tracy successfully completed an intensive entrepreneurial program at University of New Orleans. She also completed an arts-focused entrepreneurial program, showcased her work in art exhibitions, and has been featured in an art tv show as well as numerous newspaper articles.

What drew you to apply for the 2023 Capacity Building Cohort?
There are several reasons I applied to the cohort. One of those is that this provides an opportunity for me to learn from experts and peers in the field of nonprofit leadership.

What do you hope to learn or gain from this experience?
I have made so many good new friends. I have so many people to reach out to when I have a problem or concern. I have good friends to celebrate with.

What drew you to work in the nonprofit sector?
I was drawn to work in the nonprofit sector because of a deeply personal experience that highlighted the transformative power of art in my own life. As I navigated a challenging period, art became a vital source of solace and inspiration, allowing me to find strength and meaning in unexpected places. It was during this time that I realized the profound impact art can have on individuals and communities, and I felt a strong calling to create similar opportunities for others.

Directing Noel Community Arts Program allows me to combine my passion for the arts with my desire to make a positive difference. Knowing that I can create spaces where art is not only appreciated but also utilized as a tool for healing, education, and empowerment is incredibly fulfilling. I am grateful for the opportunity to impact lives and create a lasting legacy through the transformative power of art.

Tell us a little bit about your nonprofit journey.
My nonprofit journey has been deeply rooted in the transformative power of art and my personal experiences. My educational background includes a degree in psychology and certification as a secondary level English teacher. However, it was my own struggles with severe depression and unresolved trauma that led me to discover the healing potential of art.

In my darkest times, art became a lifeline that gave me a voice when words failed me. Through painting and drawing, I found a path to healing. This profound personal experience awakened a passion within me to share the therapeutic benefits of art with others.

While I never set out to direct a nonprofit, my love for NCAP and the realization that I could make a meaningful difference as its Director compelled me to pursue this new career path. Today, I find myself happily immersed in my role, grateful for the opportunity to combine my love for art and my commitment to the community through NCAP. My journey serves as a testament to the unexpected paths life can lead us on and the joy that can be found in embracing new opportunities.

🔦2023 Capacity Building Cohort Spotlight🔦

Rev. Deacon Lois Maberry (she/her)

🟡🟣🟡🟣🟡🟣🟡🟣

The Rev. Deacon Lois Maberry is an Episcopal Deacon with a love and passion for working with individuals who have experienced homelessness. She began this work over ten years ago through St. Luke’s Mobile Medical Ministry in the Shreveport Bossier City area. She also has volunteered extensively with Hope House, a day shelter for those who have experienced homelessness as a case worker. Her current position is Chair of the Board of Settled Inn Village and the Acting Executive Director for this new non-profit organization that is working to develop a community of tiny houses to house those who have experienced Homelessness. Prior to her volunteer work, she practiced Physical Therapy to both adults and children for 40 years. She is married to Ron Maberry and the mother of three grown children and Lollie to 3 beautiful grandchildren.

What drew you to apply for the 2023 Capacity Building Cohort?
Working in non-profits requires collaboration as there are so many facets of the situations each organization attempts to address. When scheduled opportunities are provided to share ideas problems and concerns, all benefit. We are like-minded and learn so much from each other.

What do you hope to learn or gain from this experience?
I have made so many good new friends. I have so many people to reach out to when I have a problem or concern. I have good friends to celebrate with.

What drew you to work in the nonprofit sector?
As a volunteer for other non-profits, I became friends with lots of individuals who have experienced homelessness and had the compassion to work to improve their living situation.

Tell us a little bit about your nonprofit journey.
My mother and grandmother were always involved in volunteer work through the church. I was raised in that environment. I enjoyed the times of serving others. After graduating from Physical Therapy School, I loved working with people. During PT sessions, my clients had many opportunities to share about themselves and I realized working with the whole patient lead to more improvement than just focusing on their physical problems. I became aware that the world is not an equal place and that I was privileged and needed to give back to work to help those in need. This along with my continued involvement with the Episcopal Church clarified my calling to ordained ministry. In 2016 I was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church with my ministry focused toward assisting those who have experienced homelessness. It was clear that quality affordable housing was very limited and I have made it my ministry to work to change this. Settled Inn Village is where I chose to direct my energy.

The Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf Women of Distinction Event was so exciting we forgot to give some shout-outs!

Erica McCain (center) has been working with our nonprofit capacity-building cohort as a mentor, and her contributions have been tremendous!

Lynn Stevens (center) has been on the INAR Advisory Board, and we have loved having her support and guidance.

We aren't the only ones that know how great they are, though, because both were recognized and honored as Women of Distinction.

This week we had the absolute honor and privlege of hosting the Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf Women of Distinction Event. Our Executive Director Dr. Heather Carpenter is a Girl Scout, Gold Award Recipient, and Troop leader. Dr. Carpenter's daughter said the Girl Scout Law and LSU Shreveport's Vice Chancellor Julie Lessiter was recognized as one of the Women of Distinction.

Thank you to the Girl Scouts and all those in attendance!
