The City of Byrd is excited about Louisiana-Lafayette coming to Shreveport for the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl on December 23. It means you’ll get to see—and hear—Byrd’s Class of 2022 drum major and current Ragin Cajun tuba player Charlie Martin! The last time Charlie was in Independence Stadium he lead the Byrd band as they played the alma mater at graduation. We love it when our Jackets continue to pursue their passions when they leave The City of Byrd. 💜💛🐝💜💛

Congratulations to C.E. Byrd head coach Stacy Ballew and his coaching staff on their 4-0 start to the 2022 season. During his first season as a head coach last year, Ballew and the Yellow Jackets went 9-2. You would have to go back 61 years to find a first-year Byrd head coach with a better record. The year was 1960 and J.D. Cox took over for Lee Hedges, who moved to Woodlawn High School. Cox and the Jackets went 11-1 that season. However, Byrd started the next season 2-3 in 1961. To find a coach in school history who has reached 13 wins in his first 15 games, you would have to go all the way back to 1935. Lee Dobson's Byrd team went 11-1 in his first season, winning a state championship with a 19-0 win over Jesuit. The following season, Dobson's Byrd team went 7-1-1. Their only loss was 6-0 against Haynesville.

“Say what you want to say, but just make sure you say it’s over!,” C.E. Byrd head football coach, Boyd Cole after beating Jesuit to end 31-game losing streak on September 18th, 1986. It had been so long since the Jackets raised the victory flag that administration had to hunt for it. The tradition of raising the victory flag ended in 1987. The flag is now framed and hanging in the Purple & Gold Room. It was a night the Jackets (and the manager of the McDonald’s on Line Ave.😂) would never forget. Article ✍️ by Teddy Allen! 💜💛🐝🏈💜💛

Last but not least, we have our faculty inductee for the 2022 Byrd Hall of Fame - Roy Thomas!
Mr. Thomas has an extensive resume in the profession of education and civic membership. He began his educational career as a social studies teacher at C.E. Byrd until 1984 where he transitioned to Broadmoor Middle School as an assistant principal. In 1986, he returned to “The City of Byrd” as an assistant principal until he began the journey of being a principal at Linwood Middle School from 1994 to 1997. Mr. Thomas then went to Caddo Parish School System’s central office and served in the capacities of middle school, high school, and cluster director until his retirement in 2010.
His civic duties include the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Linwood Public Charter School Board, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Louisiana Middle School Association Board, and many more organizations. In his spare time he loves to play golf, tennis, walk, and record local history.

Only 2 more to go! Our next 2022 Hall of Fame inductee is Stephen D. Porter, class of 1973!
Stephen D. Porter is an active local artist and teacher for the Bossier Talented Arts Program. Porter is well known for his murals at Artbreak and for the community mural on Texas Avenue. He enjoys the challenge of working on a larger scale with two of his most notable artworks measuring 25’x5’ and 9‘x12’.
“Birds, open doors, windows and stairs, animals, clowns and faces, their expressions litter my canvas like a modern day Guernica,” states Porter. “My thoughts, my experiences, each stroke of my brush is influenced by my life and what I have seen or thought I saw, what I heard or thought I heard.”

Today's 2022 Hall of Fame inductee highlight is Cynthia Peterson, class of 1975!
Cynthia B. Peterson was appointed dean of the LSU College of Science in August 2014 and holds the Seola Arnaud and Richard Vernon Edwards, Jr. Professorship in the Department of Biological Sciences. She leads a college of five departments and the Museum of Natural Science with about 250 faculty and more than 2,900 undergraduate and graduate students. She is the first woman to head the College of Science and since assuming the position has overseen significant increases in college enrollment, with a 25 percent increase in freshman enrollment in fall 2018 that came from a 46 percent increase in undergraduate applications that year.
A staunch supporter of science communication, Peterson is committed to broadly communicating the impact of science and research and the strengths of the LSU College of Science. Under her leadership, the college has also developed a number of outreach projects that connect it with the local community and inspire the next generation of scientists – beginning in kindergarten and continuing through high school.

Our next 2022 Hall of Fame inductee is William "Bill" Peatross, class of 1961!
Bill's life at Byrd clearly prepared him for a successful business and legal career in our
community and state. His participation in the yearbook staff, the national honor society and
his appreciation for Irma Robinson's Latin classes were building blocks for his education at the LSU School of Journalism and the LSU Law School.
When not practicing law at the firm of Wiener, Weiss and Madison, Bill is an avid snow skier at
his second home in Colorado, an incorrigible gardener and a runner, having completed 40
marathons around the United States.
