LSU Shreveport has a proud history of success in debate. In the last decade the team has won more than 3 dozen national championship titles in the IPDA.

Ever since its founding, the team has had a proud history of successful competition in local, regional and national tournaments. The team is made up of individuals who come from a variety of backgrounds and majors. After a long day yesterday, LSUS debate is headed home, but not without success to celebrate! Professional division competitor Matthew Gedeon broke to semifinals and won 2nd place speaker in his division, and Junior Varsity member Jewel Thomas broke into octofinals and made it all the way to semifinals. Jewel also won the tournament’s costume contest as Katara.

The team was very happy to be able to compete in an in-person tournament for the first time in over a year. For many competitors, this was their first in-person tournament. Everyone had fun and learned from their rounds, which is the greatest success in our book!

Yesterday, Junior Varsity member Jewel Thomas and Varsity member Daniel Davis teamed up in the first Team IPDA debate of the season at Middle Tennessee State University. Today, 9 competitors compete in individual rounds. Wish everyone luck! Go Pilots!

With our move to virtual debate tournaments for the season, we're hoping to bring back "Emilie's Cafe" for the 2020/2021 IPDA Season. As most of you are aware, the IPDA committed itself towards raising funds to help find a cure for childhood cancer in memory of Emilie Gibson.

The Fall effort at "Emilie's Virtual Cafe" will run through the end of the calendar year, and will run parallel to our effort to have all of you identify the Fight Like Emilie Foundation via Amazon Smile as we prepare for the holiday season.

Any amount you contribute will be designated towards the Fight Like Emilie Foundation and their efforts to raise awareness and generate support in the ongoing battle against childhood cancers. At the end of the 2020/2021 Season, the Foundation will recognize those who contribute as noted in the "Debate for Life" campaign described on the IPDA website.

As always ... "just keep swimming"!

[09/15/20]   SHREVEPORT, La. – Applications are now available for interested students to join the LSUS Debate Team for its 2020-21 season.

Boasting a variety of awards including national and regional victories, Debate offers students opportunities for growth in professionalism, public speaking, and more. Applicants should have the desire to excel, contribute to a team environment, and learn.

“Debate taught me to be a critical thinker and to challenge my core values and beliefs by looking at multiple sides of an issue,” former debater Megan Arbuckle said. “I gained confidence in public speaking that will continue to help me throughout life. On top of that, debate has provided me with a family and support group that made transferring to LSUS an easy and enjoyable process."

Students are encouraged to be a part of debate because of the opportunities to expand critical skills and exposure to the world.

“Before joining Debate, I was a band-wagon voter,” former debater and national champion Mary Catherin Procell said. “Raised in a small town, I was content going with the flow. Since becoming a debater, not only do I seek unbiased resources, but I passionately make my own decisions. I am now a more educated and active member of society.”

Debate additionally offers experiences that grow curiosity and intuition.

“Debate has changed my life without a doubt,” current debater and team co-captain Ethan Arbuckle said. “Not only has it given me research and presentation skills, but it’s also a community. We work hard to understand and communicate with people we do not agree with, and that understanding is unique.”

For more information on joining the LSUS Debate Team, please contact AJ Edwards at [email protected].
