It was a pleasure introducing the AHEAD high school students to the Medical Laboratory Science profession. They performed blood typing and a urinalysis. They learned about microscopics. They even performed cultures from their phones, hands, and mouth to see bacteria! 🔬We may have some future MLS in this group!

Congratulations, 2012 LSUHS MLS graduate, Brittany Harris! She is the Laboratory Director at Minden Medical Center and was recently recognized as an Employee of the Quarter.

Congratulations, Dr. Barclay, on your appointment as the new Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at LSU Health Shreveport School of Allied Health Professions.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Madeline Barclay, EdD, MPH, on her appointment as our Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. In this role, she will oversee administration, policy, supervision of student groups, admissions, recruitment, records, teaching, and research.

Dr. Barclay currently serves as the Director of Admissions, managing the onboarding and matriculation of all Allied Health students. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Centenary College of Louisiana in 2013 and a Master in Public Health from LSU-Shreveport / LSU Health Shreveport in 2015. Recently, she completed her Doctorate in Education in Leadership Studies at LSU-Shreveport.

The MLS faculty at LSUHS enjoyed hosting a group of high school students with the AHEAD program. These high schoolers learned about the importance of the Medical Laboratory profession. In the student lab, they experienced using the microscope to view peripheral blood smears and gram stains, and performed blood typing on simulated patient samples. We hope to have a few future MLSs in this group!

It’s time to celebrate all of our valued Medical Laboratory Professionals! You all play a pivotal role in patients’ health care! Thank you to all of the Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, Phlebotomists, Laboratory Assistants, and everyone else that plays a significant role in the lab.

Several of the Medical Laboratory Science students participated in the ASCLS Race to JAM Student Bowl competition. They had a great time competing against other MLS programs throughout the nation. We appreciate ASCLS putting this together ~ Such a great experience!

It was such an honor to celebrate Medical Laboratory Science students, Brianna Green and Claire Floyd, on their induction into the Alpha Eta Honor Society. They were selected by the MLS faculty for their academic achievements and leadership in the MLS program. And another congratulations to Kristin Butler, selected as the 2024 Alpha Eta Faculty Inductee.

Words from her nominating faculty: Claire is a model student and an absolute asset to our School, both in and out of the classroom. In the fall semester, she initiated and organized a school-wide supply drive for the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana. Claire is always helpful to her fellow classmates, always has a pleasant attitude, is eager to learn, motivated and inquisitive, and easily stands out as a natural leader in the classroom. She is conscientious and meticulous, displays excellent time management skills, and fully engages in classroom discussions and group exercises. It's easy to see that Claire is a lifelong learner and has a true passion for healthcare, as she excels academically with ease while also showing empathy and compassion in all the patient cases she has faced so far in our program. Claire is going to be a dedicated, capable, and fabulous Medical Laboratory Scientist, and every team she works with will be grateful for her service, performance, and time with them, as are we.

Microscopy is a huge skill that all Medical Laboratory Science students learn. This week, our students spent time in Mycology identifying a variety of fungi based on microscopic morphology.
