"Centenary is an exceptional institution with exceptional students, faculty, and staff. I've both witnessed and experienced a number of transitions since I stepped on Centenary's campus for the first time 29 years ago. Through all of the easy and difficult transitions, Centenary has kept to its principles and prioritized student success. I look forward to serving and leading the Department of Athletics and Recreation as we prepare to build upon a solid and successful foundation built by so many past and current leaders and I am excited to work with an amazing faculty." - David Orr

Pitters enrolled at Centenary as a freshman during the 1967-1968 academic year. Having grown up in New York City, Pitters said in 2012, “I didn’t come to break down barriers. I came to Centenary to go to school and find out for myself what it was like to be in the South.” In 1971, Pitters earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in humanities. During his time at Centenary Pitters was a member of the freshman basketball team, making him the first Black athlete at Centenary. He was also a member of Sigman Tau Delta, an English Honor Society. Pitters is now an accomplished poet and has hosted several virtual convocations at Centenary recently. You may view them on the Centenary YouTube channel.
