We Did It!

Thank you for your very generous support of the school during the Give for Good campaign. We not only met our goal of $150,000 but exceeded it, raising $164,680. Praise Academy came in #2 in total giving out of 241 organizations!

It is because of all of you that the building next door to the school is now ours and we are able to continuing providing tuition assistance and a quality education for our families.

Thank you for your prayers, financial support, and the many volunteer hours. We could not do this without you!

We're all masked-up!
We're back in full swing and have added six new students. Some of our new students are siblings of current students, and some have come to us through word of mouth and door knocking in the neighborhood. This summer Latisha, our first graduate, and two teachers canvassed the neighborhood for new students. Latisha, now a sophomore at Loyola Preparatory Academy, shared her experience at Praise Academy. Several of the neighbors said, "Way to go, girl"! And "Keep it up"!

Although this year looks different than other years due to Covid protocols, the students are thrilled to be at school. The teachers and administration have spent countless hours creating health protocols so that everyone could return safely. On arrival the students and parents are asked a series of Covid related questions and students have their temperature taken. Students and teachers all wear masks and practice social distancing, and when weather permits, we even have some of our classes outside.
Check out our new video! Consider supporting us as we educate the children of Allendale/Lakeside.

For the past several years Praise Academy has participated in an online giving event called Give for Good. It provides nonprofits in the Shreveport area with an opportunity to tell their stories and multiply giving by the Community Foundation of NW Louisiana.

Give for Good is an important event for us as it allows us to raise approximately one third of our yearly budget.

Give for Good is only one week away and advanced giving has already started. If you feel called to give, please click here:

Thank you for all your prayers during this difficult time and know that we continue to pray for you.
Last week, while our teachers were working at the school, one of our Praise Academy parents drove by the school. Her three children wanted to say hello and wave to their teachers from a safe distance.

The mother said, "Definitely shed tears seeing the school today but seeing y'all made me shed even more. We miss you all and we are all trying to have patience during this time".

She went on to say, "Y'all pray for me though. I'm still shedding tears, because, not only do I miss Praise Academy, but I miss all the students and their smiles and I miss the excitement of them being around y'all. I miss y'all and I think I will jump in y'all arms before my kids do".

We sure do miss all the kids and their families too and are praying daily for them all. Please join us in praying for them.

We are praying for you too. We are praying that God protects you and gives you peace during these unprecedented times.

In Christ,

Julie

Here's an update on Praise Academy.

On March 13th, John Edwards, the Governor of Louisiana closed all schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This will run from March 16th through April 13th, at which time he will reevaluate the situation.

Last Friday, Miss Joan, the principal told the student body that we would be closing, and tears and sobs erupted. The children love Praise Academy and the idea of not attending school was very difficult for them.

But Praise Academy teachers and staff are coming up with creative ways to care for our students and their families during this difficult time. I want to briefly share with you our action plan moving forward and how you can help.

Food:
Some of our families need food. We have contacted each family to see what their needs are and how we could help meet those needs. We emptied the school’s freezers and pantry and took boxes of food to families (picture below). The city of Shreveport is providing various feeding sites where families can enter a drive-thru to obtain breakfast and lunch for their school-aged children. We are ensuring that our families have all the information they need to get through this situation.

Learning:
Most of our families do not have internet access, so e-learning is not possible. Praise Academy teachers are putting together learning packets for the students to do at home. These will be dropped off at their doorstep each week and we will check on their progress weekly.

How can you help?
Please pray. This is not a last resort. It should be our first. We want to make the most of what God is doing with us at this time. A collateral benefit of this is that the overall health of our children will be improved, because of the focus on personal hygiene.

Needless to say, these are difficult and uncertain times. Your regular support is critical. Continue to Support here.

May the Lord bless you for your generosity.

Last week our science class moved outdoors where the students discovered that if you combine baking soda and vinegar it creates enough CO2 to inflate balloons! It was the highlight of the day and a good time was had by all!

Surgery in the Classroom?

We've been busy this week! The students learned grammar by dressing up as junior surgeons. They “operated” on a word combination that was their “patient.” After disassembling all the letters (“performing surgery”), they put most of them back together as a contraction. The students were really concentrating on this. It was an ingenious technique for learning an abstract concept in a concrete way.

With school back in full swing the third through sixth grade classes have been studying Roman times in History class. For the past few weeks Paul Hommes, a People of Praise missionary in Allendale and the older boys have been building a trebuchet, also known as a catapult. Catapults were devices used during Roman times to hurl stones or other objects in battle. Once the catapult was completed the students demonstrated it for the whole school.

Success!

Latisha, our first graduate from Praise Academy, started her first day at Loyola College Preparatory High School, the best private high school in Shreveport, LA according the NICHE, an organization that ranks schools. Loyola placed her in their honors freshman English class on her admittance. We are so proud of her and all that she has accomplished. We will keep in touch with her. We will miss her!

Latisha wants to go to college to become a surgeon. She wants to live in the neighborhood and care for those around her.

Some of our students were so eager to begin the new year, that they dropped by Praise Academy several times the week before school started to see the teachers! They couldn't wait for school to start.

Finally it arrived. Our first day of school started with breakfast, followed by morning prayer and orientation. It was a very peaceful day and the students are excited to be back.

A Grandmother's Prayer

Maxine, the grandmother of second grader Kamilah, had been praying that God would provide a new school for her. Both Maxine and her daughter Ranita wanted a new school for Kamilah, but which one and where?

A few weeks ago Maxine prayed again, sat down at her computer and began a search for a school. The first link that came up was Praise Academy and an article about Jo and John Zimmel who had moved to Louisiana from Minnesota to spend their retirement teaching at Praise Academy in the Lakeside neighborhood of Shreveport.

Maxine knew the Lakeside area well because she grew up in the neighborhood. So, the next day she drove to Yale Street and found the school. Walking in she was greeted by Mary Grams, the pre-school teacher.

Maxine said, “I felt peace and relief when I first came in the building. I cried I was so overwhelmed.” Mary and Maxine talked about the mission and vision of Praise Academy. They prayed together for Kamilah, and set up an appointment with Joan Pingel, the principal to discuss admission.

On Monday, February 4th, Kamilah started school at Praise Academy. Everyday Kamilah tells her teachers how happy she is to be there.

God answered a grandmother’s prayer.

Read how God provides!

“See, God does take care of us!”

A few weeks before the start of school, Joan Pingel, the principal at Praise Academy, heard that a local mall was giving away free backpacks and school supplies. Joan decided to borrow a neighbor’s van and take four Praise Academy students with her to the mall.

“The line at the mall was daunting. There were hundreds of people,” said Joan. As they waited, the oldest of the children pulled Joan aside and said, “Miss Joan, we don’t have any food to eat at our house.” Joan replied, “Let’s get the backpacks and then we’ll talk about how to get you and your family fed tonight.”

Just then some mall workers came by, trying to engage children in a Hula-Hoop contest. The four students were eager to participate. The contest started and most of the children were eliminated very quickly, with the exception of one Praise Academy boy, the one who said his family didn’t have food to eat. He won the contest and a $25 gift card to a local fried chicken restaurant. Joan quickly congratulated him and said, “Look how the Lord answered your prayers. You have food for dinner.”

After they received their backpacks they headed home. Joan dropped off the children and the boy ran into the house, excited to tell his mother what he won for the family. His mother looked at him and said, “See, God does take care of us.”

Families at Praise Academy live below the poverty level, with a median household yearly income of less than $14,000.

At Praise Academy, we welcome all families regardless of income. Private donors like you pay for every student. https://www.praiselakeside.org/ways-to-help/
