One year ago today, Officer Derek Chauvin forced his knee on George Floyd’s neck where it stayed 9 minutes and 29 seconds. The profound grief was too much to bear, and the sacrifice of another Black life was just too great.

May 25th will forever be etched in our hearts as a day when America was reminded that the people united will never be defeated. As we stand today, we continue to fight for justice and seek the passage of the George Floyd Justice & Policing Act.

Delta Sigma Theta honors his life and the lives of thousands of Black Lives lost at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve.

Calling all members of Delta Sigma Theta to stand in support of Kristen Clarke's nomination. If confirmed, Kristen Clarke will be the first woman and the first Black woman to lead the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. Her leadership, drive and experience are crucial for ending the rise of hate crimes in America.

Contact your senator at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to vote “yes” to confirm Kristen Clarke to lead the DOJ Civil Rights Division. Her confirmation will bring a much-needed change to ensuring equality and equity in America.

As a citizen in the United States, you have the right to vote and have your voice heard in every election. Casting your vote is fundamental to America’s democracy. It's the most basic - and essential - building block of our government. In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted key portions of the Voting Rights Act, which protected eligible voters from discriminatory voting laws. The court claimed those protections were no longer necessary.

Today, voter suppression legislation, tactics and schemes are being implemented across the country. Congress has a duty to make sure that every eligible voter can engage in the electoral process, access voting and cast their vote without any barriers.

Delta Sigma Theta's National Social Action Commission has organized the first virtual Delta Days in the Nation's Capital to advocate, collaborate, educate, discuss, and strategize on federal legislative priorities and proposals impacting the communities where our members live, work, and serve.

We have been called for such a time as this. We have been called to be on the right side of history.

Special Legislative Priority #3: Creation of Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans

Delta Sigma Theta urges Congress to address the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 by establishing a commission to do the following: study the institution of slavery and consider a national apology; develop a proposal for reparations to address slavery's subsequent de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African Americans and the impact of these forces on living African Americans; and to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies among other purposes.

Special Legislative Priority #2: Classify Lynching as a Hate Crime

Delta Sigma Theta urges Congress to specify lynching as a hate crime and calls for justice for victims of lynchings to finally be acknowledged as a part of America’s stained history.

Delta Sigma Theta urges Congress to expand all Americans' access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, strengthen the ethics of public servants, and implement other anti-corruption measures to fortify our democracy and for other
purposes.

We applaud those who defended and protected George Floyd’s legacy with today’s ruling. Today is a good day for justice in America, but one of the too few days we’ve seen in our lifetime. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated recognizes that there is much that remains to be done to build a justice system where the lives of Black Americans are not consistently devalued in our encounters with police. Following in the footsteps of our Founders, we will continue to strive more earnestly for reforms that promote proactive training to address officers’ implicit biases, explicit legal accountability, and crisis de-escalation in law enforcement.
