JOB SUMMARY:
The Teacher Assistant works under the direction and supervision of the Lead Teacher. The assistant is responsible for supervising and interacting directly with the children. The assistant will support the Lead Teacher in facilitating all aspects of the planning, organization and implementation of the daily program.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
The teacher assistant is accountable in all areas of school policy to the center director and to the lead teacher with whom she works on a day to day basis.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities of this position will include but are not necessarily limited to the following:
EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMMING:
• Assist with supervision of children at all times in classroom, restroom, and on playground.
• Assist with documentation of daily needs, reports, and observations.
• Assist in developing and implementing daily activities.
• Assist in an equal share of housekeeping, class preparation, ordered arrangement, appearance, decor, and learning environment of the classroom in cooperation with other staff.
• Assist in keeping in good conditions and using all material and equipment provided by the Center.
• Assist the lead teacher in carrying out goals, policies and activities designed to implement educational objectives.
INTERACTION WITH CHILDREN:
• Serve as a role model for the children in the areas of attitude, speech and daily actions.
• Treat each child with dignity and respect for his/her cultural background.
• Encourage children’s development in the areas of building self-confidence, problem solving, and taking responsibilities for their actions.
• Attend to the physical needs of the children, following established routines.
• Interact with each child on a daily basis through circle time, centers, snacks, lunchtime, playground, free play, etc.
• Be consistent, but lovingly enforce classroom discipline plan.
• Report changes in a child’s general health or behavior to the lead teacher as soon as they are noticed.
• Maintains confidentially on children and families.
RELATIONSHIP WITH PARENTS:
• Greet parents daily as they drop off and pick up with a warm smile and positive comment about their child.
• Assist in maintaining effective communication with parents through the daily reports.
• Inform the office when a child has been absent for more than two days, so they can check on him/her.
SUPPORTING STAFF RELATIONSHIP:
• Maintain and improve professional competence through CDA or CEU classes.
• Attend all schedule staff meetings and pre-planning sessions.
• Attend all in-services and trainings provided by the center.
• Accept and utilize comments and criticism from the lead teacher and the administration in a constructive way.
• Cooperate with all staff members, especially in the use of common areas and in sharing materials.
• Coordinate with your team mate to have all shifts covered in case of absences. Switch schedule if needed.
ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS:
• Turn in request forms for time off at least three working days in advance. Request will be approved on a first come basis.
• Excessive tardiness will be documented and may result in a written reprimand.
• Inform the administration of damage or broken material in classrooms and common areas.
• Assist it any other duties assigned by the Director.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to sit on the floor, bend at the waist, kneel and/or stoop down 75% of the time.
• Ability to safely lift or assist children weighting up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to multitask while supervising children inside and outside.
• Ability to respond to children’s needs, emergencies, and/or conflicts that might occur in the classroom, on the playground, and /or in common areas.
What a fun week we had celebrating Dr. Seuss! We ate green eggs and ham(turkey), dressed wacky or as a favorite character, wore crazy socks, and created a class t-shirt.
