Matsukan Karate Dojo

Traditional "old school" martial arts We teach traditional "old school" Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate. It contains the punching & kicking techniques that are most commonly thought of when thinking "karate", but it also includes the Judo style throws and Jujitsu style joint locking and grappling techniques that are often only found in a non-competitive, old style, karate dojo.

[12/28/19]   I post this every year in hopes one or two lines may help someone..

1. Your shoes are the first thing people subconsciously notice about you. Wear nice shoes.
2. If you sit for more than 11 hours a day, there's a 50% chance you'll die within the next 3 years.

7. There are three things the human brain cannot resist noticing - food, attractive people and danger.
8. Right-handed people tend to chew food on their right side.
9. Putting dry tea bags in gym bags or smelly shoes will absorb the unpleasant odor.
10. According to Albert Einstein, if honey bees were to disappear from earth, humans would be dead within 4 years.
11. There are so many kinds of apples, that if you ate a new one every day, it would take over 20 years to try them all.
12. You can survive without eating for weeks, but you will only live 11 days without sleeping.
13. People who laugh a lot are healthier than those who don’t.
14. Laziness and inactivity kills just as many people as smoking.

28. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
29. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Forgive them for everything.
30. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
31. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
32. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
33. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
34. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
35. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'
36. Help the needy, Be generous! Be a 'Giver' not a 'Taker'
37. What other people think of you is none of your business.
38. Time heals everything.
39. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
40. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. Each night before you go to bed, pray to God and be thankful for what you accomplished, today. What if you woke up this morning and only had what you thanked God for yesterday? DON’T FORGET TO THANK GOD FOR EVERYTHING.
43. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.
Happy New Year!!!!

Powerful Shaolin Monk | Ultimate Proof Traditional Styles Work, Bruce Lee Philosophy

The line between making ourselves or our loved ones a hard target or a soft one is entirely dependent on one person, YOU!

SCENARIO: In this photo the shirtless man (man #1) made a rude comment about the other man's (man #2) female companion, man #2 could have walked away but instead approached squared up to the man #1 who is concealing a 6" knife in his waistband. Man #2 was stabbed in the abdomen.

You can practice all the martial arts techniques and weapons techniques in the world but the moment you put yourself in a situation or area that makes you a soft target, you’re no longer practicing smart self defense and awareness and ultimately are at fault for any physical danger that happens to you, your loved ones or innocent bystanders! Someone insults and you get in their face instead of walking away, you have made your self a soft target.

Someone cuts you off driving, regardless who was at fault, and you engage with them verbally and escalate further confrontation, you have made yourself a soft target.

You go to or even worse take your loved ones to an area or event fueled by drugs or alcohol you have made yourself a soft target.

You hang out with people constantly in trouble, you have made yourself a soft target.

The best self defense will always be the one you never have to use!

Tips shared from #ARCSSelfDefense

So I am pretty frustrated watching all these untrained "experts" attack the Police Officer who was involved with shooting a lady who aggressively advanced on him/her with a pair of scissors yesterday. Anytime that anyone is shot it is tragic. This writing is simply intended to shed light on to some of the "why" when a situation occurs.

First, there is a lot of details that few people know unless they were there or have viewed camera footage of the event. So reserve judgement until you have a full perspective of the event and not just your "feelings".

Second, many agencies don't carry Tasers, or have a small number of officers with Tasers, because they are as much of a liability as they are an asset. Most people don't know that Tasers fail to be effective roughly 40% of the time in a field usage. Taser lines break, probes miss their mark, clothing causes failure to connect, and many people who are mentally ill or under the influence don't respond to being tased the same way a sane and/or sober person would. Simply put, it is a bad plan to use a tool that is only effective 60% of the time against an edged weapon that doesn't run out of ammo or jam like a pistol could.

Third, make no mistake scissors are just as deadly as a knife or ice pick (see attached photos). An edge weapon in the hands of an untrained person is still extremely dangerous and often deadly. When an officer is faced with a deadly threat, deadly force to protect themselves and others is a reasonable response, and the courts have held this to be true time and time again.

Fourth, as a firearms instructor certifed by more than one organization let me address all the comments about how they should have shot her in the arm or leg, or how they should have shot the scissors out of her hand. Officers are taught to shoot to the middle of the largest target (chest/center mass) for several reasons like: The chest is the largest target yielding the best chance of hitting the suspect and reducing a miss that endangers anyone else. Arms/legs are small target and the chance of a miss goes up drastically thus exposing anyone nearby to being hit on accident. The chest is thicker and more often prevents a bullet from passing through and hitting an innocent. The chest often causes enough trauma to stop the attack where an arm or an leg wound may not stop a determined attacker.

Fifth, from an ability perspective. I've been a martial artist for over 35 years and I have taught martial arts for over 20 years. I have trained in various methods, in numerous locations, across the United States and around the world. I'm a Law Enforcement Trainer and Instructor for more than one Defensive Tactics system. Even with all my experience and at 6'3" and 235lbs, I am not going hands on and fighting someone who is armed with an edge weapon unless it is my only option and then it is going to be messy.

So before you start spouting off uninformed and half cocked opinions about how you "think" things should work in a perfect world remember this isn't a perfect world. You are asking cops who are just regular people to often do things that very few of you could do.

The Lost Art of Striking in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Lesson time....Strikes are a must and were once a part of all Jiujutsu. Judo was formed by taking the throws from Jiujutsu and formng a system of ranking and scoring. This allowed Judo to be named a sport so it could be practiced during the martial arts prohibition in Japan imposed right after WWII. Many Japanese ended up fleeing before and during the war to South America and other locations and took the martial arts with them. So let's be honest and stop saying that Brazilian Jiujitsu was "invented" in Brazil. It is Japanese Jiujutsu & Judo that was modified slightly over the years in is out for the day....   In the majority of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies around the world, they will teach you the sport aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. This means no strikes, and little self defense, but more focus on the modern sweeps, guard passes etc.. We all watch MMA and have seen Jiu-Jitsu in an MMA fight (think of the firs...
