A sweet mother of two came into the diaper bank for some period supplies today.

She recently lost her job due to COVID, and was really sad that she & her kids can't afford to go out and do anything fun.

I asked her to sit tight while I brought her information on the Noel Community Arts Program, the Renzi Education and Art Center, and the YWCA of Northwest Louisiana.

She lives just down the street from our office in the Highland Neighborhood, and just couldn't believe there were all these opportunities for fun on a budget right around the corner.

Then I told her about NWLA Makerspace and Adapther - also here in Shreveport.

She left our office grinning from ear to ear because she and her kids now have affordable arts & education options...and they can have some fun doing them together!

Thank you, Highland, for being the best neighborhood in Shreveport...we definitely chose the best location for our diaper bank!
The Renzi Education and Art Center is more than just an after-school program; it’s the foundation for so many children who do not think a world outside of Shreveport-Bossier is possible.

They have an incredible team there and we just love the work they’ve been doing in our community for nearly 25 years. 🎉 Consider supporting them today for Give for Good!
A Black author, who created and wrote about black adventure heroes passed away today.

He was a friend of mine.

In an interview from several years ago, he talks about his proudest moment.... It involves the Renzi Center..... Even though he's a lifelong resident on New York City.

He doesn't mention that it was his idea to send free copies of the book.

"3. What are your most memorable or proudest moments in your writing career?

An art teacher working at the Renzi Education and Arts Center in Louisiana read my YA novel “Young Dillon In The Halls of Shamballah” and asked me if I would send some copies to him for their library as he thought it would be wonderful reading for the young black male students. I did indeed send him three copies and he sent me back a picture of one of his students reading my book.

At the moment I saw that picture I felt a tremendous pride and feeling of gratitude. I grew up reading characters like James Bond, Doc Savage, The Avenger and The Shadow and as a youth I wondered why there were no black heroes like them. One of the reasons I write what I write is that I wanted to fill in a hole I had been seeing for years. And if something that I wrote can instill a young black man with satisfaction that he has an action adventure hero that he can read, enjoy and get excited about, I’m satisfied. As I said to my wife when I showed her the picture: “That’s what it’s all about.”

Buy a plant at The Agora Borealis, support our neighbors over at the Renzi Education and Art Center. 💚 What a great way to get in the green spirit today!

If you've never heard of the Renzi, they are a FREE after school program available during the school year to K-12 kids in the Shreveport/Bossier City Area. They are located on Egan Street in the Highland neighborhood and have been around since 1997.

The Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners awarded over $15,000 in community grants this year.

Money went to places like the Renzi Education and Art Center and the Caddo Career & Technology Center to allow them to expand their horticulture programs for students.
