Everyone loves ice cream, chocolate cookies, and sprinkles! Students discover the different layers of the earth as they make their own edible aquifer models. In this activity students explores how rain and snow flow through the layers of soil, called strata, and than collect below ground as groundwater. Lastly, the area where groundwater collects is called an aquifer!

Oreo Moon Phase students used delicious cookies to explore Moon phases and the interaction between our Earth, Moon, and Sun!

The student is expected to observe, describe, and record patterns of objects in the sky, including the appearance of the Moon.

The Student knows that there are recognizable patterns in the natural world and among the Sun, Earth, and Moon Systems.

The student is expected to collect and analyze data to identify sequences and predict patterns of change in shadows, seasons, and the observable appearance of the Moon over time.

Career Connection: Astronomers study planets, moons, stars, galaxies, meteors, comets and their interactions with each other.

Creating Kites grades K-2

Objective: Students practiced accountability by following a specific set of instructions in order to create a kite out of brown paper bags, streamers, and strings, while learning about creative expression and physics.

Social Emotional Skills 1) Confidence 2) Accountability 3) Resilience.

Academic Explored (Science, Math) 1) Measurement 2) Creative Expression 3) Physics- Lift

Cognitive Skills Employed 1) Creativity 2) Following Sequential Instructions

Ready, aim, fire! Who can score the most points with Cupid’s mini bow and arrow? Watch potential energy turn into kinetic energy as your arrow launches across the room!

Students are expected to design a descriptive investigation to explore the effect of force on an
object such as a push or a pull, gravity, friction, or magnetism.

Students are expected to compare and contrast potential and kinetic energy.

Students are expected to identify and describe the changes in position, direction, and speed of an object when acted upon by unbalanced forces.

Career Connection:

Mathematicians study numbers, data, quantity, structure, space, models, and change. They analyze all kinds of measurements and types of data and use mathematical techniques to help solve problems in the world. They often work with teams of scientists and engineers.

Physicists study the natural world, from the tiniest subatomic particles to the largest galaxies. They do experiments to discover the laws of nature. They study what things are made of (matter) and how things behave. They also learn about energy, studying how it changes from one form to another.

Students construct a sturdy, highflying paper airplane, Then attach it to a launcher to see how much farther they can make it soar

The student is expected to demonstrate that air is all around us and observe that wind is moving air.

The student is expected to observe forces such as magnetism and gravity acting on objects.

The student is expected to design a descriptive investigation to explore the effect of force on an object such as a push or a pull, gravity, friction, or magnetism.

The student is expected to design a simple experimental investigation that tests the effects of force on an object.

Career Connection: Aerodynamicists are engineers who specialize in aerodynamics, or, the study of how air moves around objects. They design and construct the safest and most efficient vehicles that travel through the air.

Squares, circles, or triangles ― which shape do you think makes the strongest structure? Use gumdrops and toothpicks to construct a dome structure that is strong and won’t collapse.

The student is expected to combine materials that when put together can do things that they cannot do by themselves, such as building a tower or a bridge, and justify the selection of those materials based on their physical properties.

Architectural engineers often use triangles when they design buildings. Did you notice that your dome is made up of lots of triangles? That’s because triangles are stable shapes. That means they don’t bend, twist, or collapse easily when you push on them. A square is not as stable as a triangle. Test it! Make a gumdrop square and triangle out of toothpicks and gumdrops; then stand each one up. Press down on one corner of each shape. How do the two shapes compare? Does one bend, twist, or collapse more easily than the other? Think about the materials that real buildings are made out of. Do you think architects use the same structures that we used in our activity when designing buildings?

Career Connection:
Architects plan and design buildings for various uses. They use their scientific and mathematical knowledge of physics to understand building construction as well as their artistic abilities to design visually appealing structures. Architects are scientists, mathematicians, and artists. To become an architect you need a four-year degree and a professional degree from an architectural program.

Opposites attract! Discover how electron transfer causes positive and negative charges while creating an electroscope from straws and tape.

Students are expected to design a descriptive investigation to explore the effect of force on an object such as a push or a pull, gravity, friction, or magnetism.

Students are expected to describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations, of protons and particles neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in the electron cloud.

Career Connections: Chemists study the properties of matter at the level of atoms and molecular. The research includes understanding the structure and composition of many different chemical and even creating new substances that help our lives!

Students made their own batch of slime! The Slime Goo (polyvinyl alcohol) is a liquid polymer. When you combine it with the Cross-Linker Solution (sodium tetraborate), the molecules from both substances link together like chains.

Career:
Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals and bio-chemicals.
