Neurochild Community

Do you ever think about the many micro-decisions educators and carers make every day? Appreciating these thought processes, that are sometimes taken for granted, is a great reminder to rest and replenish cognitive reserves when possible.

Many of today’s educational leaders are transitioning from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the long-term development and success of all children —physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. This has increased carer expectations, which now focus on inspiring, cherishing, provoking and enticing deep learning processes in children being cared for across multiple domains.

This is a taxing but worthwhile endeavour. Consider how many aspects the whole child approach requires thinking on, at any given moment. There are dozens of tiny micro-decisions that are required every minute. And these are different for each child. They exist even prior to meeting objective requirements of the environment.

Task-switching, or the act of managing several cognitive tasks at the same time, is neurobiologically expensive. It burns more glucose in the body, which can lead to cravings, and it accelerates mental fatigue. Doing too many things at once has been shown to slow down reaction times, increase tiredness, and weaken will-power or self-control. A whole child approach, to be truly sustainable, therefore needs educators and carers to practice more #selfcare, and it also requires the right environmental support to really reach its full potential.

Caring, when done right, can be exhausting. So ensure that some of that care runs off to bathe you. How many things that you teach do you make sure you practice yourself?

McKinney Bryd Academy

McKinney Byrd Academy comes with History
McKinney Byrd Academy is named after Dr. Sheryl Lewing’s deceased parents – McKinney and Albertha Lewing. Mr. Mack "McKinney" Lewing was a businessman and Mrs. Albertha "Byrd" Lewing was a Caddo Parish Educator. Both parents were actively involved in the local community before they passed away. Mr. McKinney Lewing had operated several businesses and some are still in operation: Mack's Barbershop and CB Lounge. Mrs. Albertha Lewing was involved with students as the counselor at Union High School and Lakeshore Junior High.
Dr. Sheryl Lewing is originally from Shreveport but had migrated to Washington, DC, several decades ago.
During the time away, Dr. Sheryl Lewing owned and operated “I CARE Development Center” in Washington, DC. Dr. Lewing comes with a background in Entrepreneurship, Special Education, Biology, and Environmental Science.
McKinney Byrd Academy will provide several programs that will honor both parents. The first program is a nonpublic school S.T.E.M.
