Congratulations Kindgergarten C/O 2022 🥳💙
1st Grade here they come!
The authors of several of the most popular series in the library will be at the FREE book festival! Authors include RL Stine, of Goosebumps fame, and Jennifer Holm, who writes the Babymouse and Sunny graphic novels.
Additionally, some of our 5th graders have read the excellent Tristan Strong books, which will soon have a graphic novel. Kwame Mbala does a great job writing an adventure story that incorporates some of the folktales they learn about in 3rd grade!
This is an amazing opportunity for your child to meet professional authors from near and far.
Announcing the 2022 SML Children's Book Festival Schedule! The festival will take place on Saturday, May 7 from 10AM-4PM and will feature authors including R.L. Stine, Jennifer Holm, Kwame Mbalia, Brenda Maier, as well as a stellar lineup of local authors and illustrators.

Hoppy Easter, Vikings! See you on Tuesday.
We are back tomorrow for our last day before Easter weekend. See you in the morning, Vikings!
Following last night’s storm, Southern Hills Elementary will be CLOSED due to a power outage. Please stay safe Vikings!💙
Last week we celebrated Read Across America with a Reading Spirit Week. Ms. Hadwin was better at pictures some days more than others. Please excuse the many selfies. The kids were more willing to selfie with me than pose alone.
Congratulations to Ms. Dodson’s 5th Graders! Those who met the success criteria for their Making A Scientist Unit had their hard work rewarded with a little fun on Friday.
Ms. Hadwin is terrible at grabbing photos, but here are a few of students celebrating Mardi Gras today. Tomorrow “Readers are in Shape” is our theme and we will be enjoying shirts with circles, squares, triangles, etc. We will also enjoy a story walk on campus!
This week we will kick off National Reading Month with a Read Across America Spirit Week.
The themed days reflect the various ways we interact with reading. We read to learn about new people and places! We read to learn to new skills! We read to entertain ourselves and have fun!
We look forward to a wonderful “Reading Spirit Week!” 📚💙

Our Book Fair had amazing support this year from our families on campus, and I can’t thank the families who supported their children in shopping for books enough! However, we still have a few days of online shopping before it is truly done for the Fall! Shopping online through the Scholastic Store on this link before November 28th will continue to support the fundraiser!
Kitten posters, FGtv books, and more are available here:

This year we had several outstanding finalists: Makena Jenkins, Charrick Braden, Jaden Baylor, Kobe Mosley, & Arlando Arkansas. All of these nominees are not only hard working students, but also model good citizenship and student leadership.
We are pleased to announce Charrick Braden as the 2021-2022 Southern Hills Student of the Year.🥳⚓️💙

Just a reminder to Southern Hills families, all of our students have a “virtual” card at the public library. The two branches closest to the school are Hamilton-South Caddo, across from Ridgewood, and Cedar Grove-Line Avenue, between 3132 and E. 70th.
Those cards also allow the students to access the electronic services offered by the library, including access to Hoopla and its many, many graphic novels. (The most popular style in our school library!)
