Future insurance professionals: business auto coverage is built around the covered-auto symbols shown in the policy declarations. Knowing what each designation includes is essential when analyzing a commercial auto policy.
Symbols 1–9 at a glance:
1: Any Auto
2, Owned Autos Only
3, Owned Private Passenger Autos Only
4, Owned Autos Other Than Private Passenger Autos Only
5: Owned Autos Subject to No-Fault
6, Owned Autos Subject to Compulsory UM
7, Specifically Described Autos
8, Hired Autos Only
9: Nonowned Autos Only
Hired autos are vehicles the business leases, rents, hires, or borrows. Nonowned autos are vehicles the business does not own, lease, or hire but are used in connection with its operations, such as an employee’s vehicle used for business errands.
Business use and personal use also matter. A vehicle’s ownership, who operates it, how it is used, and which coverage applies all help determine the appropriate designation. A symbol that fits one coverage line may not automatically apply to another.
Study tip: Always compare the declarations, covered-auto symbol, vehicle schedule, and business operations before deciding whether an auto is covered.
