Today we learned all about topography! We used a lesson the NPS put out about Death Valley and it was great! I was amazed at his comprehension of how to read the maps and we were able to check out some other maps (of the Grand Canyon and, more locally, Stony Brook where we will be spending Memorial Day weekend) and he was able to calculate the contour interval and talk about what it might look like in different sections of the maps- honestly- until today, I don’t think I understood as well as he now does.

In addition to our National Parks study, we have been doing a butterfly study - we ordered painted lady caterpillars (a popular butterfly at Yosemite) and also got a kit from 4H to learn about monarch butterflies and plant milkweed. All 5 caterpillars have now emerged and our milkweed is planted.

Over the past few weeks, Josiah has learned about Yosemite, Yellowstone and its geysers, Grand Teton, the Redwoods, Death Valley, many animals, and we have had some fun “field trips” to Wild Wings, the zoo, and the planetarium (they have a National Parks movie!).

We finished up our study of John Muir with more hiking, checking out animal tracks, observing wildlife (snakes and birds), and journaling.

We also began our Yellowstone study by studying bison.

We spent time yesterday and today learning about a great man, John Muir. Josiah read a biography about him and loved learning about his childhood antics in Scotland (like hanging out his window by a finger and standing on his roof in the wind) as well as his later adventures traveling all around America. We got to go on a hike and he marked a trail map, checked out some animal tracks, and took some nature photos.

Yesterday, he also colored in the states we will be visiting this summer and it was a “wow” moment for me to see the result- so many new places to see!

Woohoo! Our final unit of the year will be our longest yet. We will spend 12 weeks learning about the National Parks we will get to visit this summer (we will likely visit 14 on our 37 day trip). Today Josiah learned about World Heritage sites and how some National Parks are also World Heritage sites and why. He got to look at some maps and painted a climate map on a salt dough representation of the U.S. we made before spring break (along with a turtle... there were more animals, but our dog took a bite out of the salt dough creations when we left them out to dry 😆).

This unit has me SO excited. There is so much learning for both of us and I’m making a lot of resources, but also finding wonderful books, resources put out by the National Park Service, and we are doing some family fun learning through a show called “Rock the Park.”

The depth I got into planning his Marvel unit was shallow at best, but some learning happened and he loved reading lots ...

The depth I got into planning his Marvel unit was shallow at best, but some learning happened and he loved reading lots of Marvel stories.

The rest of this school year we will be studying the National Parks we will visit this summer in preparation for our cross-country trip along with maybe getting a caterpillar to butterfly kit.

I still need to post some old pictures from our Marvel unit, but we collected sap, made syrup (finished off a propane tank on our grill burner before moving the operation inside), and learned about the Iroquois legend of its discovery, which was really fun and delicious!

Thankful to the Shortsville Reindeer Farm for allowing us to collect sap!

We are continuing our study of the Arctic, though I’ve been awful at taking pictures (and the photos you see are from many days even though he is obsessed with the one sweater and wears it almost every day 🤣... I have taken it away to wash it, I promise!). We’ve done food webs and anatomy lessons, a study of the Inuit, lots of play-doh, the max amount of books we could get from the library, some great documentaries, and some great lessons I found online. Next week we will move onto Antarctica.

Math comes easy to Josiah, so we don’t spend too long on it (usually no more than 5 minutes), so the best part is at the end when he asks with exasperation “has it been 5 minutes?”

He’s done 2-digit addition with regrouping about 3-4 times before this and he picked it up really fast (we only did 3 problems today- gotta keep it to 5 minutes, haha!).

We learned a LOT about Arctic wolves (thanks to Disney’s The White Wolf series) and Arctic foxes (thanks to Prime’s Iceland and Wild North episode 1). It’s been a relief for me incorporating some documentary learning (he still has Montessori cards, but it’s hard to challenge them, though we will be learning to identify different types of seals and penguins over the coming weeks which I think will be a challenge!). He also has no trouble with 2 digit addition with regrouping now and we even tried 3 digit for a fun challenge today (I’ll post a video of him trying it out),
