Fellow SHS Alums - The Michael D. O'Donnell Memorial Scholarship at SHS is finally a reality. Thanks to the generosity of many of you, the Class of 1963 has given the school $22,189.61. Combined with a promised $1,500 from the Shorewood Foundation, the total amount available for the scholarship is $23,689.61.

Under the terms of the MOU between our class and the school, $1,000 will be awarded annually to a deserving student to pursue post-secondary education in the arts. Mike's story will be told at each year's awards ceremony, and a plaque honoring him and containing an excerpt of his most famous poem will be erected in the Auditorium Building.

Thanks to all of you who contributed. Mike's legacy, and the always-timely message of his poem, will live on at our high school.

Peace,

Below is a link to an interview on WISN of Jon Reddin, an SHS '63 classmate about a fellow classmate who was a Vietnam War Hero, Mike O'Donnell. It's an interesting and compelling story. Jon is halfway to his goal of $20k to fund a Memorial Scholarship in the Arts for SHS students, the Arts because Mike was a musician and is quite famous for his poetry. I am hoping you'll make a donation, however large or small. Also feel free to pass this along to anybody else that might be interested. Also please repost on your page.

In That Time: Michael O'Donnell and the Tragic Era of Vietnam 06/18/2024

Fellow 1963 grads: I have been a photographer all of my life, and after retiring from my day job started a small photography business, selling my landscape photos at art shows. I am doing an art show this Saturday in Ellison Bay (Door County). I am going to donate 100% of my sales from that show to the Mike O'Donnell Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed. If you have not yet done so, please consider a donation, large or small. We are well on our way to our goal, but we still have a ways to go. Thank you."

Amazon is out of these books, but Ebay has several copies at a range of prices. Also, There is a link to Jon Reddin's page in the comments as well as the GoFundMe page to make donations to the Mike O'Donnell Memorial Fund for a Merit Scholarship in the Arts.

Fellow members of the SHS Class of 1963 – most of you know the story of our classmate Mike O’Donnell, his heroism and his tragic death in Vietnam in March of 1970. For those who don’t, Mike flew Army helicopters in Vietnam. He was on station above a ā€œhotā€ landing zone, when he became convinced that if he did not pick up the 8 soldiers on the ground immediately, they faced certain death. He landed his helicopter, picked up the squad and began to ascend. As he did, his helicopter was struck by a rocket and exploded, killing all souls aboard.

Mike was an accomplished poet, and his poetry expressed his growing disenchantment with the Vietnam war. His most famous poem was this:

ā€œIf you are able
Save for them a place
inside of you
And save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for the places they can
no longer go
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them
though you may or may not have always
Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own
And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane
take one moment to embrace
those gentle heroes
you left behindā€

His message is as relevant today as it was in 1970, when it was written, shortly before he was killed. I have set up a Go Fund Me campaign to establish a memorial scholarship in Mike’s name, to be awarded annually to a deserving Shorewood High School student. I am also hoping to fund a plaque honoring Mike at the high school. The link is https://gofund.me/96150e51

Please consider a donation, large or small, to remember our classmate. Reposting this post would also be very helpful.

Thank you very much.
