As we observe Juneteenth, here are five facts about this important day in American history:
1. Juneteenth is celebrated each year on June 19th and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
2. The holiday marks the day in 1865 when news of emancipation reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
3. Juneteenth celebrations began almost immediately, with gatherings centered on community, education, music, food, and reflection.
4. The day is also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Juneteenth Independence Day.
5. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, recognizing its significance in the nation's history and ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality.
We wish our Shoreline College community a meaningful holiday and a wonderful long weekend. Weโll see you back on Monday!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our America at 250 lecture series!
Over four thought-provoking sessions, community members, students, faculty, and staff came together to explore the evolving story of American democracy as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
Through conversations that examined our past, challenged our understanding of the present, and encouraged us to think critically about the future, this series provided an opportunity to reflect on the people, events, and ideas that have shaped the American experience.
Special thanks to our presenters, including Ken Winnick and Dr. Luther Adams, (both pictured here) whose insights helped bring history to life and inspired meaningful dialogue throughout the series.
