Shoreline Rotary Gathering Highlights — October 7, 2026
Community, recognition, music—and plenty of opportunities to get involved!

If you missed this week’s Shoreline Rotary gathering, you missed a meeting that celebrated two outstanding members, looked ahead to important community events, and enjoyed a wonderful presentation from the Northwest Jr. Pipe Band.

We were pleased to recognize Marcia Holiday as a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF1) and Kristina Hatting as a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF+1). Congratulations to both Marcia and Kristina, and thank you for your continued commitment to Rotary and our community!

We also received an invitation to the Shoreline College Giving Table Luncheon. If you would like to join Shoreline Rotary at our table, message us and let us know you'd like a seat!

Our program featured the Northwest Jr. Pipe Band, bringing terrific energy and music to our meeting. A big Shoreline Rotary thank-you to John Garlid and Kevin Auld for making the presentation possible. To learn more about the band, visit nwjpb.org.

There are several opportunities coming up for Shoreline Rotarians and friends to connect and serve:
**Friday, October 16 — District 5030 Foundation Celebration Dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel. Come celebrate the impact of The Rotary Foundation and the difference Rotarians are making through service.
** Wednesday, October 21 — Shoreline Rotary and Lake Forest Park Rotary Joint Meeting. It's a great opportunity to connect with fellow Rotarians and strengthen the relationships between our clubs.

**Friday, October 23 - 48th Annual Rotary Cup Football Game as the Shorewood Stormrays and Shorecrest Scots face off in one of Shoreline’s favorite hometown traditions

**Saturday, December 5 — Christmas Shopping Spree for Students from Parkwood. Watch for more information about how you can help make the holidays special for local students.

October 7: Young Musicians, Big Traditions: Northwest Junior Pipe Band Comes to Shoreline Rotary

The Shoreline Rotary is thrilled to welcome two speakers, John Garlid and Kevin Auld, for an inspiring presentation on the Northwest Junior Pipe Band!

The Northwest Junior Pipe Band (NWJPB) is Washington State's only competitive youth Scottish bagpipe and drum band. Founded in 1995, the non-profit organization is dedicated to providing world-class musical education, teamwork, and leadership development for youth ages 8 to 18.

Discover how this remarkable organization mentors young musicians in our region. Our speakers will share insights into the band's rigorous training, competitive achievements, and dedication to community service. You will learn how learning traditional piping and drumming builds lifelong leadership, teamwork, and discipline in local youth.
Join us for this uplifting session to celebrate regional talent and community mentorship!
Our in-person gathering is at Shoreline Community College in the Quiet Dining Room in the HUB (Student Center-Building 9000).

**Supporting Shoreline’s Small Business Community 💙💛**

October is Rotary’s **Community Economic Development Month**—a time to recognize the important role local businesses play in creating strong, connected and thriving communities.

One way we can support our local economy is by helping share opportunities that connect business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with resources, advice and one another.

📣 **Navigating Success: Small Business Forum**

The **Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, City of Shoreline and Washington Small Business Development Center (SBDC)** are bringing local business owners and those considering starting a business together for this free event.

Attendees can:
• Meet local business resources
• Receive free one-on-one advising from the Washington SBDC
• Hear from local business owners about what has worked—and what they would do differently
• Connect with other members of Shoreline’s business community
• Enjoy appetizers and refreshments

The forum is **free, but an RSVP is required**.

There was a time when summer brought a fear that many families today have never known: polio. Outbreaks changed plans, closed gathering places, and left parents wondering how to keep their children safe.

That history belongs in our conversation about the future. Behind every public health milestone are families who waited for it.

OCTOBER 2 | KNOW POLIO.

Polio is caused by a virus. It can damage the nervous system and cause permanent paralysis. It spreads mainly when the virus from an infected person’s stool reaches another person’s mouth, including through contaminated food or water.

Children under five are most often affected, but anyone who is unvaccinated can get polio. Vaccination helps protect them.

Knowing what we are working to prevent makes the promise personal.

Support our neighbors by supporting HopeLink in this food drive. Lots of convenient drop off locations!

The Shoreline Food Drive starts today!

Throughout October, community members can donate food and other essential items to support Hopelink’s no-cost food markets. The City of Shoreline is supporting the food drive by providing two community drop-off locations:
📍Shoreline City Hall
📍Spartan Recreation Center

The food drive runs October 1–31.

Most-needed donations include canned meals and meats, cereal and oats, dried or canned fruits and vegetables, grains, soup, shelf-stable non-dairy milk, nut and seed butters, and more.

Any other Rotarians or community members who want to join in on the Rotary Club of Woodinville and City of Woodinville Planting day on Saturday, October 3rd, there is still room for more volunteeres!

🌱 Help Us Grow a Miyawaki Forest! 🌳

The City invites you to join us for a volunteer tree planting event on Saturday, October 3, as we work together to create a Miyawaki Forest.

Our goal is ambitious: 300 volunteers working together to plant native trees and shrubs! We’re inviting organizations, clubs, groups, families, and individuals to be part of this community effort.

What is a Miyawaki Forest?
The Miyawaki planting method uses dense plantings of diverse native species to quickly establish a healthy, resilient forest ecosystem.
