All students in the U.S. have a right to public education, “regardless of a child’s or guardian’s citizenship, immigration status, or English language proficiency. These rights were upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 1982 decision in Plyler v. Doe.” 🚸
⚖️ Recognizing the fundamental common good to society of educating all our children, the landmark Plyer v. Doe decision opened the doors for the children of undocumented immigrants to attend public schools.
📋Check out LFJ's resource page: "Supporting Students From Immigrant Families" to learn more about immigrant students’ rights, public schools’ obligations to immigrant students, and resources for families.

Mission Focused Advocacy and Fundraising
As the school year winds down, PTAs (local, council, state) are holding elections, approving next year’s budgets, and setting the stage for a successful 2026-2027 school year.
School districts around the state are experiencing shortfalls, and school administrators have to make some very difficult decisions. Losing a favorite teacher or meaningful school program can be heartbreaking for families and staff, and some look to the local PTA to come to the rescue.
What should be funded by the PTA? What should a PTA say no to? How can PTA leaders thoughtfully navigate these types of requests? All these questions and more are addressed in our recent blog post, written by Beth Cogan, our region 6 advocacy chair with help from her region 6 advocacy team: https://www.wastatepta.org/mission-focused-advocacy-and-fundraising/

Juneteenth is coming up on June 19. On that day in 1865, over 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were informed that the Civil War was won months earlier and they were finally free. Since then, June 19 has been celebrated as Juneteenth. Check out the National Museum of African American History & Culture’s Juneteenth Reading list:

Student Opportunity!
Join the WSPTA Student Advisory Committee!
We are looking for students to help upraise student voice in WSPTA! We are looking for students from all areas of Washington that would like to help us form a WSPTA Student Advisory Committee!
What is the commitment?
The commitment would be one meeting a month via Microsoft Teams. The meeting would last about 1 to 2 hours. There may be other tasks that would take outside time and there may be opportunities for in-person events.
What will the committee do?
The committee will decide once it has formed, but here are some possibilities: advocate for certain legislative issues, plan student programs on issues that students think are important, plan student events and trainings and create peer to peer resources.
Who can join?
Any student in grades 6th thru 12th that attends a Washington state high school, secondary or middle school is welcome. Please note these requirements may change based on what the committee decides.
Why should you join?
You will gain leadership skills, communication skills, program planning skills and learn more about WSPTA and the role students can play. It can also count as volunteer hours and will look good on your resume. You will have a huge impact on what WSPTA offers students and on empowering student voice.

Last week we were thrilled to present Third Place Books Lake Forest Park with our 2025-2026 Outstanding Community Partner Award!
Third Place Books has been a wonderful friend to Shoreline PTA Council and Shoreline Public Schools for many years. Every year, they host the Pride Book Fair and often give or discount books for our school libraries. They share their commons space for events like SEPTSA Connection and other PTA meetings and are always looking for ways to help students and families. We look forward to a continued partnership in the years to come!
