A New Special Education Update for Washington Families, ESHB 2557.

A new change to special education rules means parents must receive their child’s evaluation report BEFORE the IEP or eligibility meeting.

The requirements of this new rule will go into effect on June 11, 2026. For most students, this will impact evaluations initiated during the 2026-27 school year.

OSPI is seeking public input as part of the Transition Collaborative's Transition Services Learning Sessions.

Led by OSPI's Special Education Division, the Transition Collaborative is a group of agencies and councils working to improve transition planning and outcomes for students with disabilities. Transition services are the supports, instruction, and coordinated activities that help students with disabilities prepare for life after high school, including further education, work, independent living, and community participation.

The Transition Collaborative is seeking your recommendations to include in a report due to the Legislature in October 2026.

Listening sessions are being held in April with:

- Students, Families, and Advocates
- Educators

Please join us with Sound Options, OSPI, and Disability Rights of Washington to discuss the four formal special education dispute resolution options in the K-12 public school system. After their presentations, there will be a panel of community members to share their lived experience.
