We had such a great time planting with some of our community members on Saturday— together we put approximately five hundred and fifty native shrubs and trees in the ground!
Special cheers to them and a warm thank you to everybody who participated in all of the events that took place during the first ever Ashokan Watershed Month. That’s a wrap!

This crew spent the day digging holes for, watering, and placing hundreds of native shrubs and trees in preparation for tomorrow’s (Saturday, 9/28) riparian buffer planting!
The planting will take place from 10am until 2pm at the intersection of Mink Hollow Rd and Van Hoagland Rd in Woodstock. Join us for the planting or meet us at Phoenicia Diner afterward for our Watershed Month Closing Party!

Last month AWSMP attended a tour with regulators of the Filtration Avoidance Determination (FAD). We learned about the success of stream projects in the Rondout-Neversink Watershed to our South and how they made them a success!

We found a new friend/mascot at the office this morning. A red eft (the juvenile phase of the Eastern Newt) was found hanging out in our parking lot. Likely all the rain made him vacate his typical habitat. We made sure he got back to a more natural setting safe and sound. Share your amphibian/critter pics with us here too!

The last batch of mushroom pics. We hope you enjoyed viewing them and have inspired you to learn more about many different types of funding in our Watershed. Special thanks to our Stream Assessment Coordinator Allison Lent who took the photos. Remember, don't eat any mushrooms you find in the forest unless you can identify them and be certain that they are not poisonous.

There's a fungus among us here in the Ashokan Watershed! All this wet weather may have made most of us waterlogged but has provided a great opportunity for all these different mushrooms to grow! Our Stream Assessment Coordinator, Allison Lent, took most of these photos during her field work this summer all around our Watershed. We're not mushroom experts and would be grateful if those of you who are can help identify them. There's more where this came from so check back again later for additional photos. Also be on the lookout for "guest" appearances from office mascots Hudson and Leo, Allison's dog and cat.

We recently had our very first freshwater stream snorkeling event. It was a great success with our participants seeing lots of cool things under the water and the Esopus Creek was running very clear that day. Japanese Knotweed is an invasive plant that is endemic in our Watershed. Knotweed chokes out native plants that provide better streambank stability. AWSMP is working with landowners in Oliverea and with the Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership (CRISP) to pilot some control projects in the headwater streams to keep it from spreading.
