𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄! 🎉

Christin Johnson is the STEM Teacher and Fabrication (STEM & Fabrication with Ms. Johnson) Lab Director at Shoals Elementary & Middle School (Shoals Community School Corporation ) (Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning Hub). Christin has been teaching for 9 years. Christin will guide her students in her project, Fit for the Future Building Health and History Stations for Our Community, where sixth-grade students are undertaking a project to revitalize the local ballpark, transforming it into a safer, more interactive community hub.

From low-tech to high-tech STEM
students have been busy:
* collaborating on buttons for Red Ribbon Week
*using the laser cutter to print an animal and label the external features necessary for survival.
*discovering concepts such as force, motion, and speed
*designing structures with a purpose

Mostly set up! I could not be more proud of what these students accomplished! They have poured their all into these projects and learned SO much in the process! Technology, engineering, math, perseverance, problem-solving, design, computer literacy, critical thinking, project planning, time management, collaboration, communication, creativity and innovation…just to name a few 😉

Students have been very busy in the lab the past few weeks reviewing machine protocols and completing the fabrication process from conceptualization to production. This weekend the students will be selling their items at the SPA craft shows at Shoals High School! Money raised will be used to purchase STEM supplies. Below are just a few of the items they have created!

Third grade students 3D printed and painted animals for their habitat research projects!

STEM students planned, fabricated and produced items for our school custodians. Students were able to use 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, heat presses, and more to produce their items. I was impressed with the students’ creativity and thoughtfulness with this project!

Life in STEM class lately! The first 9 weeks have flown by!!
We are fully immersed in problem solving, coding, project-based learning and fabrication!

🖍️Thank you Blaire Coulter for the acrylic markers and pens! The students will be so excited to use these on their upcoming projects.

🧼Our current need is baby wipes! We do not have a sink in the lab. I had some stockpiled but we are going through them quickly. 🧼

We had an incredible first week of STEM at Shoals!! It was awesome to see all of the students’ excitement about our new program.

This week was all about safety and the Engineering Design Process. Students in grades K-6 completed an activity to practice the steps we will follow to solve problems.

We had a GREAT first day of STEM!! It was awesome to see the students’ excitement!

As much time as I spent thinking through our processes, I quickly discovered a few things that we desperately need! Dry Erase pockets being the top priority! The dry erase pockets allow me to make 1 set of copies and reuse them for multiple classes, instead of wasting paper. They are on sale on Amazon today!
